Castle Dacton
Purpose / Function
It was a building designed for defense, designed for battle. It is sited on a hill, as most castles are, which makes it easier to defend as attackers would have to struggle up the slope for the last few hundred meters. The ground in front of the castle walls has been cleared as it allows no cover for attackers, and lessens the chance of the castle being taken by surprise.
Architecture
It is squat and slab sided and is sited on a hill. No attempt had been made to beautify the castle. It looks like a mass of stone plopped down on top of the hill. It dominates the landscape and is gloomy and threatening in appearance.
History
“It’s not too stylish, is it? But in over a hundred years, it’s never been taken by attackers.” Crowley MeratynIn 607 Skandians and Sonderlanders besieged Castle Dacton and were repelled.
