Dr. Stein's Notes

November 13, 1430 Success! I’ve done it! My hypothesis was correct that one’s soul could be blended with that of a Majimonster. I administered the draft of unteathering to both myself and a Goreilla, then I plucked both of our souls and mixed them up. Then I placed half the resulting soul in the Goreilla’s body and half in the prepared jar. I now see through the eyes of the Goreilla. It was strange to see my body from other eyes. I think I will keep it, for further experimentation. My next experiment involved getting injured by another Majimonster, my hypothesis being that when my Majimonster body was damaged significantly it would return to the jar like a drajule and I would then be able to re-manifest myself some time later after a period of healing. This hypothesis also proved correct. I should now be able to repeat these results. My heart soars with triumph that Berthold’s illness does not have to be the end!   November 15, 1430 I could not save my Berthold with science. I have failed. He is entombed in the courtyard, but I can hardly bear to visit him, the shame of my failure is so great. We could have had eternity together. Where did I go wrong? How could the experiment have worked on me and not him?   November 30, 1430 I have succeeded in another experiment. I have imbued my old body with Majimonster magic and made a new species. I wish I had started a little sooner. I spent much time grieving Berthold, and the body was not in great shape for experimentation when I got to it. Nevertheless, the experiment was a success. I have bound this monster into a duplicator crystal, so now I have infinite copies of my old self to do my bidding. They are not very pretty to look at but they are quite useful.   March 26, 1431 My new visage has made me something of a local curiosity. As such I’ve been entertaining the most interesting guests. The latest to come to call is Umberto, a noble from Pearlwich. We had met previously in the last Thrice Full Moon festival. Word reached him of my experiment and he came to see for himself. He is a marvelous specimen. He’s almost as charming and handsome as my Berthold was in his younger days, and quite the marvel with a sword. I just want to keep him forever. I think will hire a painter to paint his portrait for me, or perhaps a sculptor to make an ice likeness of him. Or perhaps both.   March 30, 1431 Thinking it would be rather amusing, I hired a street tough to accost Umberto and I while in Bismuth. For a few coins and a bottle of wine, I would get to see Umberto’s sword play in real action. It was a thing of beauty. He sliced up the tough in no time at all, hardly expending any effort. And after he shielded me from the sight like a true gentleman. He never noticed me plucking the soul. I had my doubles collect the body of the tough later, thinking I could perhaps use him for more experiments. I had to bolt and stitch him together again, but I think the experiment came out well. It’s a pity, he was kind of pretty for a street tough. His name was Fenton. Perhaps I can get the portrait artist to paint him as well.   May 9, 1431 A new guest has come to call, a witch from the south. Edeline is her name. She wishes to learn the craft of making phylacteries. She is lovely like a doll. She reminds me of a doll I had as a girl. I think it is still in the castle somewhere.   August 12, 1431 Such important visitors I have today! The Emperor’s daughters Akari and Kasumi Oshiro, and two high ranking members of the Imperial Forces Mahavir Burman and Stancliff Preston, have come seeking to discus my research on phylacteries! I had no idea that my primer was so well regarded. They seemed taken aback by my appearance, the poor dears! Every one around here has gotten used to it, I had forgotten that it can be startling at first. I should check the market to see if there are any paintings of them for sale. I would like to have a memento to remind me of their visit.

Undated, probably recent

One

How dare they! How dare they How dare they How dare they! I helped them and they betrayed me! Once they knew what they needed to about phylacteries they put me to sleep. Well I will find their wretched phylacteries and break them! Who will be laughing then! I suspect they may have hidden one here in the castle somewhere, considering that they sealed the place so well. Stancliff, Mahavir, Kasumi, and Akari, your day of reckoning is coming soon.

Two

I wonder what was in that sleeping draft those pesky imperials gave me. Nightshade, perhaps? Mandrake? Or something more potent like Serapias Turbith? I should find out how long I have been sleeping. I will send my minions to Bismuth to intercept a letter or steal the logbook from city hall, that is probably the easiest way. Or perhaps they could find a broadsheet that has both the date and some news indicating the whereabouts of those Imperial brats.

Three

The magical barrier the imperials put around the castle is quite curious. They must be strong Maji indeed to have made such a thing. I can see the barrier wavering somewhat, as if someone or something is trying to break it. But if not me then who could want such a thing? Or perhaps it has just weakened over time. Maybe that is the true reason I am awake, because of a weakening spell and not a draft wearing off.
