Sunfall Cave
An Account by Connor Wentworth
Sunfall Cave is behind the waterfall that flows from Sunfall Lake. It is most likely that this cave was used as a depot or smuggler's holdout in the days of the Maji. Many sailors traveled this route up the Aegan River to trade and resupply, including one Captain Stancliff Preston. And there is evidence of magic in the cave, used to deter trespassers.
The first corridor is high and wide with a raised stone platform in the center of the chamber. There are four smaller platforms around the larger one. The whole structure is reminiscent of a table and chairs. The 'chairs' have letters carved into them, N-E-S-W, and depress slightly went sat upon. This is perhaps some trap or unlocking mechanism if one knew the right code. It seems not to work anymore though, for nothing happened no matter how many 'chairs' I sat upon.
At the end of this corridor is a small side corridor, with an elaborate golden necklace hanging on the wall. A trap for the greedy if I ever saw one. Indeed, I can see the slot in the ceiling where a metal grate would drop down trapping the poor bugger inside.
A little further into the cave, the way splits into two directions. The way to the right leads down a small side corridor with nothing much of note. The way to the left leads to a wider corridor with one wall seemingly entirely made of glittering ice! When I first saw this phenomenon I could hardly believe my eyes. Being that I visited this cave in late spring, after all the frost had melted, this sight came as quite a surprise. I thought to myself, "What natural phenomena could be responsible for such a thing?" But no! It turns out the phenomenon was not natural at all, for when I came closer to examine the ice, and reached out to touch it, my hand went entirely through it! An illusion! Another deterrent to intruders, no doubt. I seem to recall some superstition about ice among sailors, so in all likelihood probably a very effective one. I searched and searched for a source or a focus for this magic but could find none. Could it be possible that Maji had the ability to anchor their spells in thin air? I should very much like to get my friend Fygmal Tyqor to look at it, if I could ever get the chap out of his tower.
The chamber beyond the illusory ice, had nothing but a single stone cube sitting upon the floor. It was about as long as my forearm on each side, and had a heart carved into the top. What this could be for, I can't even begin to speculate.
The final chamber that I could enter just had five paintings hung on the cave walls. A chicken, a snake, a monkey, a horse, and a dog. There's just no accounting for taste, I suppose. At the end of this chamber, was a heavy door with four key holes. As I did not have the keys, I did not enter the final chamber, and I did not attempt my luck at picking the locks either, for I spotted the telltale signs of another drop down grate at the other end of the painting chamber. What secrets could lie beyond the final door? What ancient magical artifacts? What forgotten lore? What hidden horrors? The world may never know!

When I was here I saw a shy little Spiricoot darting around. I couldn't get a very good glimpse of the little thing, but that lantern it holds with its tail is unmistakable. I also spotted a few sleepy Doomwings hanging from the ceiling.Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
