Malina's Letter to Shellta

14th of the 10th Moon, 739
Dear Shellta,

I hope this small letter finds you well and that you and your friends are in good health.
I’ve been invited to stay at the Andaas’ Estate and I’ve been here since we last met. They’ve been very hospitable to me and my husband and I do feel safe enough in their guarded house. For now, at least.
I am, though, concerned about the rumours I’ve been hearing. During the Barons’ Meeting yesterday, a great deal of concern was shown towards the presence of one of the Wandering People, and they were ready to point their fingers at you and your companions. People are frightened and their superstition seems to be taking over their reason. Quite common in these Lands…
I’ve been trying my best to assure them that you have no responsibility over the current situation; and if any, you’re only trying to help, as you might be this village’s only hope of understanding and surviving these strange times. I’m glad Sentire helped me vouching for you as well. Having a Warden of Ezra amongst you was definitely a strong point in the Meeting too.
I’ve also managed to get my hands on some of the messages exchanged by the Barons. Don’t ask me how. The fire at Salvatore’s Farm Estate and the disappearance of both its Lord and his daughter brought more suspicion than concern on them, it seems. They think Salvatore is hiding something from them. They plan on sending the militia to do rounds of patrols, searching for both Salvatores and to visit houses to find any signs of more sickened people.
And they are discussing what to do with the sick. Burning them came into view … dead or alive!
The people of Vor Ziyden is scared and they need some sort of guidance. They fear for their children and I hear old stories of how kids disappeared in the past, eaten by the unseen maws of the town’s greedy. Maybe the Warden could help Sentire with a sermon, blessing these poor souls and give them some kind of hope, if there’s any. Rumours are spreading very quickly, and I’ve heard the servants whispering in the corners about Flesh-Eaters. They fear the Plague is assailing these lands and that the Gods might be angry at them. And all this bad weather only supports their fears, I’m afraid.
I can see the Mists rolling down the mountains now… Something dreadful hangs in the air… I believe that as soon as the weather improves, I will take my leave too. Please send my blessings to your friends and especially to Danica. Don’t let that girl face more than she can take. She is very dear to me, but she can be a bit too driven sometimes…

My warmest regards,

  Madame Malina
