September 4:
Jovelar, a miner that was amiss after a tunnel collapse, came to the church, broken arm, bruises/scratches, dehydrated and hungry. Slightly delirious. He managed to tell me one miner died during the tunnel collapse and then he and another one started roaming to find another exit. Then he claimed that there are a lot of tunnels besides the mining area. He said he broke his arm by falling into a pit, but swears he was pushed by a monster. Then he heard one of his companions scream. A lot. He’s scared.
September 10
A family brought their son in, Theo. Terrible fever. Pale-yellowed skin. Confused eyes. The parents didn’t look a lot better, so I asked them to stay as well. Poorly fed people. Farmers from the Septow Estate. Those rich, greedy bastards.
September 15
For the love of Ezra, I can’t reduce the boy’s fever. And now it seems his parents have the same disease. They also have such strong fever that most of the times they’re asleep. I’ve called for Lord Salvatore. He had a look at them and suggested I prepare the infirmary ward as he had the feeling more people might appear, as it seemed the parents incubation period (is that the expression he used? Goddess, he talks very complicated sometimes) was much longer than the boy’s. He found the disease most strange. His daughter, though, reminded him of a report he read about something similar in a swamp region, very far from here, where people would get yellow skin and very intense fever. Unfortunately, he said, according to those reports, nobody survived it. I hope this isn’t the case.
September 16
Goddess protects us… A whole group of farmers from the Septow Estate was sent in with the same symptoms. Baron Septow himself ordered them out of his property. He blamed them for being dirty. Now I have 10 people here and barely the resources for aiding them. I hate to have to get to the Barons for help. I’ll write a plead for them and for the Church in Borca.
September 18
My plead was not only denied by the Barons Council, but they also made it mandatory for me to keep the whole subject quiet. They do not want their wine production to go infamous. Not after the Andaas situation over 10 years ago. Such heartless bastards. Goddess forgive me for hating them.
September 19
Good Lord Salvatore gave me some supplies from his shop and also a large sum of gold. But… gold doesn’t help me much at the moment. I’ve sent one of the boys to fetch what he could from the general store, but it’s not much. I need help from beyond and above.
September 22
A couple of independent sheep farmers were brought in today, with their 2 kids, by the militia. They come from south of the lumber mill. Same disease. I’m losing hope. I need to pray harder.
September 24
I’ve got a reply from the Church in Borca. They said they’ll send some help.
October 2
Another 3 farmers were brought in this morning by Cap. Valeska. They’re from the Andaas Estate. Where’s my help?? I’ve tried praying more than I’ve ever did… and still no results. What am I doing wrong, goddess? What am I missing?!
Consolidated information about the disease so far:
During the first week most people show intense fever and basically constant sleep. When they’re awake they usually don’t say much. Too weak and also with such high fevers, they usually just ask for help or say something that makes no sense. A lot call for their mothers or for the gods. And most also claim to be hungry. Which makes sense due to their lack of condition to eat properly.
During the second week we noticed their conscience fades further and further. They’re less and less awake. And their skin starts to show signs of darkening where the veins are.
During the third week it appears they have more intense dark veins, their tongue gets slightly purplish and swollen, which makes eating even more complicated. Also, some of them showed signs of violence, waking up with bouts of rage almost attacking the Sentire or even other patients.
During the fourth week the fever seems so intense that the people can barely wake up. When they do, they plea for help, and claim being hungry more than anything. They also tend to be more aggressive, although their strength is clearly fading. Their eyes also seem to have quite a change, becoming a bit milky. Almost like a blind person, although it can’t be really said if they’re actually blind, for they do not seem to understand much of what is said.
It does not seem that people get sick by being close to the already diseased.
