Parun
The Paruns were the original founders of the Ten Ravnican guilds and as such the ones who signed the Guildpact. The requirements to sign the guildpact were that each Parun must use their magic and their blood to sign the magical document and they must do so with the desire to create a more stable Ravnica, if any one of the ten Paruns did not do this, the magic that powered the Guildpact would be null and void. This means that even the demon Rakdos had to wish for success of Ravnica during the signing. It is speculated that the immense law magic from the Guildpact curbed the Lord of Riot's chaotic nature in this instance.
After ten millennia very few still existed and even fewer were still in charge of their respective guilds.
Perception
Purpose
When the 10 Paruns gave their blood and magic to the Guildpact, the purpose was to build a stable Ravnica, free from all-out war. Though most of the Paruns and/or their guilds later selfishly attempted to subvert the Guildpact at every turn in order for their Guild to rise above the others, they never broke it and its purpose held.
Social Status
Paruns are individualistic and represent part or all of what their guild stands for. No matter their race, when they became Paruns they were acknowledged as being above their peers by not only the general populace, but by the fabric of the city itself.
Demographics
There are only 10 Paruns. There can never be other Paruns made or elected, even if the position of leadership in the guild opens up.
