Overview

Humans are four-limbed bipedal primates of the mammalian class. They have a highly developed brain capable of abstract reasnoning, language, and introspection (though they are hardly the only creature capable of this).   Humans have been on Ravnica since before recorded history. They are the most abudnant sapient race on the planet and are the only race that has members in large number in all the Guilds. However, interestingly none of the guild's paruns are human and human guildmasters are seldom though Jace, the living guildpact, is human. Humans are drawn to all colors of mana, though White tends to be the color that they graviate towards.

Etymology and definition

All humans are classified into the species Homo sapiens. The generic name "Homo" is a learned Oldworld definition which refers to humans and some other races of either sex. Other races that derive from Homo have evolved from a common ancestor some time ago, but retain enough similar genetic information to allow interracial breeding. Human is a loanword of old Nordic to differenciate themselves from the other races of similar characteristics.

Anatomy and Physiology

The human body consists of legs, the torso, the arms, the neck, and the head. The average height of a human is about 171cm for males and 159cm for females. The average weight is abou 77kg and 59kg for males and females respectivly. Humans appear in varying shades of lighter pinks and darker browns depending on where on the planet their ancestors have originated from. Humans have a far faster and more accurate throw than any other race. Humans are also among the best long-distance runners in Ravnica and have very high endurance compared to other races, but are typically slower over short distances. Humans also possess a unique sensory organ that detects magical properties around them called Magical Animus. The distance one can detect depends on the individual. It is also possible for an educated human to be able to tell which enhancements or spells are active by simple touch alone.   Humans are capable of hearing, sight, smell, taste, touch, and magical animus.

Magical Animus

Humans are capable of innately sensing magic in an area around them. How far one can detect magic is based on the individual, but those who have a powerful connection to magical capabilities themselves are able to detect at greater ranges. Anything that gives off a magical aura falls under this category which includes but is not limited to: beings, items, and spells. The more powerful the magic is, the stronger the 'scent'. Humans are capable of tuning out this scent just like any other; like getting used to smells, or adjusting their eyes in the dark or light so they are not overwhelmed with magic.

This sense is not perfect, however. There have been ways to deceive this sense, such as natural products like Mage Bane, spells to specifically hide magical essence, or simply being behind thick enough material. Humans have attempted to describe it to those who don't have this sense, but without actually feeling it for oneself it is hard to imagine. The best description would be a kind of soundless buzzing within ones mind. The stronger the magic, the more buzzing there is.

Life Cycle and Sexuality

Humans have fully functioning sexual organs up until a certain age, this usually being around 50 to 60 years. A female who is impregnated will carry a child for typically nine months until she will give birth. The human baby is very vulnerable and must be carefully looked after until about the age of six. Humans are also capable of interbreeding with other races that fall under their similar genus, though these offspring are almost entirely sterile and cannot breed further. Childen who are born this way will usually carry traits from both their parents; longer ears from an Elf or shorter limbs from a Dwarf, for example.   A human reaches puberty at around age 12 and is considered a full adult at the age of 18. The average human lifespan on Ravnica is around 85, with some humans living to upwards of about 120 and beyond.

History

Modern human have existed in Ravnica for hundreds of thousands of years. Having evolved from primates, they are the most prolific race on the planet. Throughout Ravnica's history, humans have dominated the land with their sprawling empires and long reach, and most of the guilds today had been started by and ruled by humans thousands of years ago. Today, there are no humans who maintain the title of Parun, though the living Guildpact Jace is a human. Humans are plentiful in every guild, and many of the most powerful beings on the planet are human.

Society and Culture

As humans are so widespread, so too are their cultures and way of life. Many non-humans view them as a sort of mixed bag. Any individual is capable of doing anything or being anyone, so it's difficult to guess what a human may be thinking at any point in time without knowing them. Across all the colors of mana, humans tend to gravitate towards White mana, given how there is a strong sense of order within the world it only makes sense. That is not to say that humans can't reach out to other colors, or multiple colors either.

Language

Over the course of their history, humans have had many languages. Once the kingdoms of the oldworld began to rise and fall human language started to coverge until a single language until "Nordic" was formed. Humans are also very capable of learning other languages, though the more exotic languages like Angelic and Demonic prove to be a difficult task.

Religions

There is not a single god that humans do not worship. Though due human nature to gravitate towards White Mana, the gods who have representation in that color have more human worshipers. Iroas, God of Victory and Heliod, God of the Sun for example.

Inter-species relations

As stated humans are a mixed bag. Many species tend to greet new humans with a sense of cautious trust. Humans can make great allies, and terrible enemies. They can be seen as incredibly loyal, and deviously dishonest. Humans have no natural enemies, but they have no natural friends either, it is up to the individual to find common ground with.
