Dryads

Dryads are a species of demihumans born from the powers of the Primordial of Wood. It is a rare case of entirely female species. They aren't intrinsically hostile to humans and, in fact, in certain situations are considered to be beneficial to the continued existence of Mankind. This, however, doesn't mean that this particular rose is without thorns.   Dryads have a distinct psychological side-effect that makes it likely for them to stop considering humans (or other demihumans) as anything intrinsically 'more' than just one more species of animals. This results in more mentally divergent dryad communities to occasionally lash out against human settlements encroaching upon the nature in a similar way as they do to other 'invasive' species.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dryads resemble humans, with several major differences. Those are both internal and external, dryads in general being creatures whose biology greatly diverges from what can be considered a baseline human biology, even among the demihumans as a whole.   External changes includes hair in various shades of green, the tendency for those to be interspersed with vines and flowers, and green eyes (with a white vertical line denoting the pupil location). Their skin also has a light green tint to it, a side effect of their body being partially a plant in nature, and their body being capable of photosynthesis. This, however, is heavily malleable. Dryads tend to resemble the ecosystem they were born in, so you can expect a colour shift between those living in temperate regions and those from a jungle, for example.   This 'normally' occurs on birth, however there are cases of sufficiently divergent and magical ecosystems (for example the ones of Elsewheres) altering a grown dryad to better match it. This happens more commonly with younger dryads than those that are already fully matured.   Internal changes include their body being a plant more than an animal, making them capable of photosynthesis. They can also regrow lost body parts and dissiminate their spores in the area, which allows them to control animals that inhaled those for a time depending on the amount of spores. If overused, it carries the risk of the targets (especially humans) having their intelligence and ability to make independent decisions impaired - this depends mostly on the degree of control dryad exudes over them, and can be entirely avoided for as long the dryad limits herself to suggestion rather than heavy-handed control.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dryads are capable of reproducing with almost every mammalian species, not necessarily sapient ones (however they tend to stick to those, aside from those that have truly turned their back on human civilization and their taboos, typically at least several generations from the initial dryad). It doesn't work even remotely as a normal human conception, being more akin to a plantlife having their flowers fertilized.   In fact, when pregnant, dryad's hair begins to grow small fruits, their exact taste and nutrition value depending on the environment that the dryad was living in at the time of conception. The children's species is tied to their gender, matching the parent's species.

Ecology and Habitats

Dryads are heavily influenced by the state of the environment. As a result of the industrialization and subsequent pollution, the habitat governed by them has been steadily shrinking for the past millenia. Today most of the dryads are inhabiting the remaining more or less' natural' areas of the world, with Amazonian Jungle carrying the largest known population. Even in the more developed countries, you can expect at least a few of them living in majority of the natural reserves, especially the larger ones.   They are considered to be beneficial entities (unless enraged by human encroachment), due to their ability to regulate the ecosystem around, promoting its growth and countering threats to the foodchain. They also counter spread of various invasive species, for example a variety of cryptids.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dryads obtain majority of their 'food' from photosynthesis. This, however, is only an energy baseline. It's not efficient enough to fuel dryad when it engages in more energy-costly behaviour. As a result, they tend to forage for food (typically consuming berries or other plantlife, rarely resorting to consumption of fresh meat), especially if they expect to require more energy soon.
