Magister

Introduction

The magisters are a group of the most powerful Mages that succeeded in becoming something distinctly more than human, a fact that changed them into beings existing on the pinnacle of magic as known to Mankind. Even the weakest magister is capable of engaging multiple normal Initiates in combat, and that's without mentioning the influence, arsenals of equipment and allies they often possess.   As a result, they tend to be the central pieces of the supernatural society. They are too powerful to be ignored - as a result you can expect an entire supernatural organization to be built around them, or against them. A fact that greatly contributes (together with them being typically interested in privacy, to avoid being raided by ambitious initiates wanting to become magisters) to the general secrecy and atmosphere of power that surrounds them.

General Information

Becoming a Magister

The answer to the question of 'how does one becomes a magister' is a heatly debated mystery, and finding an answer to that is a part of the journey itself, a way of weeding out those who would be too weak to succeed in it either way. As a result, one can expect copious amounts of misinformation to be available on internet alone, the truth typically being only hinted at. To be able to tell wheat from chaff is, after all, another test.   Becoming a 'magister' is a matter of going beyond the concepts of sanity and corporeal stability damage - it's to be flooded by so much power that your form and mind break, yet somehow - typically through a truly extraordinary feat of willpower - you succeed in piecing yourself back together into something that looks like human/demihuman (typically), yet most likely has very little in common with those species.

Name

The sideeffect of becoming 'something' else than human [namely, a magister] is losing your name, a fact that's a big part of your very identity being altered on a deeper level. Magister's 'born' name is typically forgotten not only by himself by also by everyone that knew him in the past. More than that - you can expect it to vanish even from documents and internet pages.   Their new names are typically one to three words long, and are a part of their very nature. When spoken, they become a conduit for their owner's power. More experienced and powerful magisters will be made aware of their names being mentioned even if they aren't there (a good way of tracking how known you are, especially if your goal is to remain hidden). They'll also have a more tangible influence - for example saying a name of a fire-magic oriented magister might make your perceive a blast of warm air, a burning of your body or other 'fire-related' concepts.   Name of more powerful magisters will cause physical results, such as (in this particular case) setting something on fire. It can even be lethal to the one who spoke or even heard their true name.

Career

Qualifications

The biggest qualification is what can be considered one's 'quality'. A part of the process of becoming a magister is highly dependent on a certain deeper and hard to measure quality (perhaps, it's about 'soul'?) of oneself. One requires to be successful in his life in general in order to have a decent shot at the ascension and avoid the threat of ceasing to be human. Major, recognizable politicians, scientists or philosophers, even celebrities, if initiated, would have a higher baseline chance of surviving it than common initiates, simple because their 'success' in the mundane world meant that they had that hard to pinpoint 'spark' in their nature.   Having that spark tends to also make you more likely to obtain the actual knowledge on how to ascend into magisterium, not to mention the necessary source of power. To truly break yourself into the base components to be then reshaped according to your will one needs either a truly overwhelming amount of raw magic powers (something to instantly break your sanity and corporeal stability in their entirety) or an assistance and patronage from a Demi-Power to flood you with power.

Other Benefits

Newly born magisters patch themselves into a stable form. The resistance to corporeal stability damages also makes them immortal - as their body refuses to change as easily as it was in the past (there is a reason why they are sometimes said to be finished pottery when compared to 'clay' that normal people are, their form now 'stable' and unchangable, while also much more 'useful' than it used to be), and this includes the concept of aging.   They are also largely resistant to sanity damage, due to having reconstructed their minds to its current form and, similarly, 'freezing' it in place. The side effect to that is that their minds are EXTREMELY hard to change, magisters tending to have massive issues recognizing new concepts, with persuading them out of their established beliefs being considered to be nigh impossible.

Perception

Social Status

Magisters are considered to be the peak of the magical world. Even a large country will probably have a dozen or two of them active at the same time, their power, knowledge and practical immortality making them a power to be respected. Many magisters can be expected to be leading major organizations of the supernatural world.
