Bronzerest

Demographics

Bronzerest is primarily inhabited by the mortal races, as it has been since the human era, but also home to a much higher than average population of dragons. This is due to a shared history with the Kindal Dragonflight, whose members make up the bulk of the town's dragon population.

Industry & Trade

Bronzerest is an agricultural center, primarily growing grains, fruits, and grapes for wine production. While most mortal residents lead primarily vegetarian lifestyles, the dragons in the region do not, and often rear livestock such as pigs, sheep, and cattle. A strong interconnected community between mortals and dragonkin in the region surrounding the town and its rural areas have allowed for trade to prosper between the populations, and for mutually beneficial relationships.   Wines, cheeses, and wools from Bronzerest are often traded to surrounding settlements in excess for other goods such as metals, currency, wood, and building materials.

History

From the Bronzerest Historical Tourism Magazine:
Prior to the War of the Flights, Bronzerest was a collection of rural back country from multiple towns and settlements that were often targeted by dragons for their livestock. When the Kindal flight left the Solar Dragonflight, one of its members settled on a hill surrounded by the farmland. Fearing that the kindal would feed on their animals like others before it, the town's ranchers and farmers sought to drive it away from the hilltop that had become its den. The kindal refused, to leave, despite pressure from the people, citing their wounds and clutch.   A deal was brokered between the Kindal and the townsfolk- the dragon could stay until healed and its brood hatched, but no longer than that, and the folk were to be left alone. Over many months, the dragon was seen to by the town's doctors, determining the dragon's wings were broken in conflict with the solars, and would not fly, but they had been amicable; buying food from the town rather than raiding farmland and ranches, and despite their wounds, cut an impressive image that kept other dragonkin away. Surrounding villages and towns became subsidiaries of Bronzerest, named so for the dragon, under its protection. Over time the mound also grew, becoming a massive petrified bed of ash and charred logs that remains standing as the town center today.
Many urban legends and myths persist to this day over Bronzerest's founding, but stories are consistent with the township being protected by a Kindal dragon, whose descendants went on to guard the mortal folk themselves and live within the area. The Bronzerest Mound, the mentioned ancient den site, has become a historical site in the modern era, though saw much use by kindal dragons throughout the centuries, each adding onto, expanding, and renovating the roost. Despite its status as a historical site, the mound is still in use today for draconic ritual, funerary rites, and internment of kindal skulls from deceased locals.

Geography

The surrounding region is the norm for Macedonia, having once been butted against the Mediterranean Sea, now raised into high mountains, cliffs, and plateaus made from the limestone. Abundance of such stone has led to the region easily having access to fertilizers for agriculture, despite its cooler and drier climate just south of the glacial line. Much of the region's fresh water comes from glacial melt in the spring and summer, which forms temporary streams and river that flow into the Mediterranean Great Salt Lake.
