Imitation Sun Koi

Manufacturing process

Blends of fish and shellfish product and byproduct are ground and formed to resemble fish fillet and injected with dyes, flavoring, and magic to resemble Sun Koi meat. Imitation sun koi sold legally is often of decent and consistent flavor, quality, and color, with many brands producing different kinds with various different forms of magic within. Most often, the imitation meat is pre-cooked both for storage purposes and longer shelf life with no additional additives such as salt, oils, or preservatives.   Illegally sold imitation sun koi meat is often less consistent, with wildly differing amounts of magic infused, may only be partially cooked, or extremely heavily flavored to cover up the taste of other additives to better pass as actual sun koi. When consumed by those fooled into thinking it is actual sun koi, it may cause allergic reactions due to the flavorings, magic, or additives used.

Significance

Imitation Sun Koi has been the subject of many controversies in the culinary industry across the world. The meat is legal to purchase in nearly all grocery stores, meat markets, and fish markets, it must be clearly labeled as such, in the same vein as vegan protein products, imitation crab and or lobster, or other manufactured foods for allergen information and transparency about the sourcing of the product.   Imitation sun koi is often used in place of selling actual sun koi meat due to its high rarity and low supply from a blend of different sea foods, heavily flavored, and injected with different magic after the blend has already been made. It is estimated that up to 20% of the world's sales of sun koi meat is actually imitation products, that does not produce the same effect and may cause allergic reactions in those who consume it due to the product not actually being pure fish meat. Markets that sell the imitation product often sell it at a very high price but notably much lower than actual sun koi, to make incredible profits at a very low cost. The meat is often artificially colored to match that of real sun koi meat as well.
