Rimewalkers
Summary
In the extreme north, creatures many times the size of ordinary creatures supposedly hunt anything they come across. They cannot be seen easily, blending into the snow, and are hyper carnivores with no fear of people, guns, or settlements. Dogs and wolves are not a deterrent to them and often, according to the rumors, become prey themselves to the creatures and the first sign that something is in the area. Rimewalkers supposedly can attack from anywhere and will rip shelters to shreds and even attack people from the water, taking them below the waves and drowning them.
Historical Basis
There are scant reports of attack by creatures anywhere near the size of the supposed 'Rimewalkers', with the few reports of death by animal attack at such northern latitudes often being attributed to the Needlecoat Wolf or bears. Many of the attacks from the water are thought to be the result of orcas who have become trapped in the ice starving and being so desperate for food they attack people. Despite a lack of evidence, many have tried to prove the existence of the Rimewalker, with some believing them to be an undiscovered species.
Cultural Reception
Many of the northern reaches of eastern Asia, Land of Gods, and many coastal islands in the arctic are considered by some dangerous to go out in alone, at night, or unarmed as a result of the urban legends.
