Shanin Boar Hunt

A tradition started by Vega, the god of fire, for selecting his heirs and also the most powerful Fire Mana to be taught by him.

History

The Shanin Boar hunt goes back many generations, it's start lost to history, but the story goes that during a competition between Fire God Vega's heirs, a hunter speared one of his children and killed them, allowing for another one of the boar to rise and become Vega's heir. Disgusted that a potential heir could be killed by a mere mortal, Vega began to test them against the island's populace. Those of his heirs who survived would go on to potentially replace their father, and the mortals who competed would be granted great power by the god or honored among his priests.   This competition continues today, broadcast the world over as a major sporting event both for the mortals and demigods competing.

Execution

After sunset on the summer solstice, fireworks will be shot from the roof of the Temple of Vega, signaling the beginning of the hunt. Competitors will start nearest to the City of Shanai at one end of a clearing, and Vega's children at the clearing nearest the temple. The borders are marked by Vega's flame and only crossed for those leaving the competition, usually mortals too wounded to continue to receive medical treatment.   The goal is to kill as many of the boar as possible, and of those killed, they are butchered and divided among the competitors and their families as a gift.

Components and tools

All weapons and use of mana are permitted, except for firearms. Spears, magical weapons, and magic itself is entirely permitted, as is the use of shifting forms, should a competitor be able to do so, except for Vega's children, who must remain in the form of a boar at all times.

Participants

Fire God Vega acts as a personal judge, watching from the foot of his temple all participants. Any who break the rules of the tradition or go out of bounds are expelled from the tournament by him, and banned from competing the following year.   The Boar- These are Vega's most promising children, all demigods, competing for a place as his heir. Those who manage to survive to the end of the hunt are trained to be his heir, and possible replacement should he die: the absolute highest honor among them.   The Mortals- All who live in the Republic of Shanai are allowed to compete, as are all users of Fire Mana. Their role is to, within the bounds of the hunt, attack and attempt to kill the boar, picking off those too weak to be Vega's heir. Injury is common, however, Vega personally makes sure each mortal cannot die during the hunt and any too injured to continue are removed and treated at his temple and join the spectators. To be a competitor, one must either buy a place with their favor to Vega, or be incredibly skilled in mana.
