Human

The term used by the sapient beings who dwell within the realm we are most familiar with, known as mortals by spirits for their limited age and lacking in any inherent protections. Humans' are unique in their variability - their height, color, temperament, and more are unable to even be guessed at except on a person to person scale. To even compare them to spirits, one would have to compare them to the gamut of Yokai. The reason for this, some scholars speculate, is the existence of a soul.

The Soul

An intangible yet certainly real thing, the soul is an intrinsic source of power and identity for humans. It allows them the ability to dream, to change, and to exist as an ever changing entity. While the details of such things are often up for conjecture, it is theorized that spirits are made of a similar energy to souls with the difference being in scale. Spirits are entirely made of soulstuff, while humans seem to cloak theirs in a body of meat, bone, and blood.   This difference allows spirits to grow powerful and mighty through the use of their energies, but by the same token limits them to a design given to them by that same soul. Humans use their souls as a blueprint, but with their physical forms they can make changes to the soul through action, decision, and rationale.   Of course, this brings to mind just what happens to a human when they become a spirit? There are legends of people becoming kami, yokai, or even akuma. This information is almost impossible to glean, as the study itself would be inhumane and bloody, but one wonders nevertheless.

Society

Humans are, due to the nature of the above, fickle creatures. As changing as the winds, they gather into societies both large and small. The largest civilization known to Japan is the monolithic China the stands as an imperceptible sleeping giant to the North and West, while smaller island nations to the West, South, and East are far less knowable save for the fisherman and traders who ply those waters.   Among humans, there is a certain stratification by birth. Some are merely born better than others - smarter, faster, strong, and so on. That blood itself is justification by many for superiority, leading to a caste-based society in both China and Japan where the noble bloods take their right to rule over the common folk. In the best of circumstances, this leads to an educated and well trained upper class who manages the affairs of those who do not know what they do not know. In the worst of them, they are abusive tyrants who grow fat off the labor of their constituents.   Between the two major powers of this era, the most obvious difference is one of the nature of nobles. While Chinese nobles can be warriors, most often they are primarily government officials and beauracrats. Japanese nobles, on the other hand, are warriors born and bred with their honor and tradition held in mind with every decision. This in and of itself makes for strained talks, though no conflict has come as of yet.
