Bonari

The Bonari are widely considered the indigenous sapient species of the planet Bo Kae, though technically this is not true. The Bonari originated on the dwarf planet Par in the same solar system, but the whole species migrated in -9946 (Empire Calendar).   Bonari are humanoid, with blue skin, two noses, no hair, and seven digits on each hand and foot. Their mouths are divided into two sections, one for speech and one for eating. They use neither for drinking, absorbing moisture through pores on their hands. Their diet is particularly grain-heavy, and they are more sensitive to some chemicals found in food than most sapients, such as caffeine. They have three kidneys.

History

The Bonari originated on the dwarf planet of Par; archeological evidence dates back to around -156m (Empire Calendar). Unfortunately very little of it remains, so not much is known about the early Bonari history outside of myths and legends.   Par began its Industrial Revolution in -166,483 (Empire Calendar), which lasted for over five hundred years. It drained the planet's resources and devastated the enrivonment, ending with mass poverty and a severe over-population crisis. A few years before the end of its glory days, the Bonari had sent their first craft to another planet, their neighbouring Onxordi, whose indigenous sapients were the Knoder, who live underground. At the time, the party had mistaken the Knoder for simple animals.   Thinking Onxordi uninhabited, it was designated the Bonari's new home world. However after having moved their entire population to the planet, the Bonari eventually discovered that the Knoder were not just sapient, but far more technologically advanced and prepared to fight back. War broke out, but given that it had really been a misunderstanding, the Knoder eventually permitted the Bonari to leave peacefully, on the condition they never returned. Although the Bonari did leave, they knew they could not return to Par.   One scouting ship reported finding another planet, later to be named Bo Kae, which was almost completely desert. After a long, much more thorough, reconnaisance, they decided it was uninhabited. However, they faced a problem in that the environment was too harsh for Bonari survival. While the government debated what to do, a rogue ship returned to Onxordi and stole some of their technology, then proceeded to use it to terraform Bo Kae and settle there. Once the rest of the Bonari discovered what had happened, they joined them.   The story of how the life-saving technology had been stolen was told down the generations, becoming romanticised in the process. Many traditions on Bo Kae honour the origins of their home by having (legally) stolen objects as part of the ritual, a tradition unique to the planet and adopted by other sapients who come to live there.
