Modi Naming Traditions
When a child is born, they take the surname of their parent of the same gender (unless it is not known, in which case they take the other's). In cases when one or both parents are step and/or adoptive, the decision is made more on a preference basis.
When couples marry, their surnames are double-barelled, with the birth name being first for each of them. When referring to a couple by their surnames, however, the male-first version is usually used, for example "the Smith-Joneses". The only exceptions are with aristocracy, in which case the titled name always comes first.
