Modian Weddings

Weddings, like other events in Modi and on the rest of Bo Kae, are complex affairs with many components, and almost always organised by a Resource Acquirer. Weddings include five days of celebrations leading up to the ceremony itself, though these are not a legal requirement.

Legal Requirements

There are very few components of a Modi wedding which are required for the marriage to be certified. A marriage license is not required before a ceremony can take place, but must be registered within a month. This unusual law dates back to an ancient Modi tradition whereby the ceremony took place exactly five days after the bride and groom were introduced, which still occurs in some social circles.   The marriage is not sealed with a kiss, but with a plunge into a body of water following a kiss. The act of falling into the water is what makes a marriage legally binding, assuming a license is filed and approved within the timeframe. In cases where falling into water would be risky or inadvisable, for example on medical grounds, smaller-scale alternatives can be arranged and are just as legitimate.

Other Components of the Ceremony

Traditionally, vows are sung, to a tune of the couple's own choosing. The music can be written especially for the vows if they can do so themselves or can afford to hire someone to do so, though most opt for a favourite tune.

Symbolism

In Modi culture, the sea--and to a lesser extent, water generally--the colour blue, and sapphires, are all associated with romance. The plunge into water symbolises the plunge into a new life together.
