Valke Printing Press

The valke printing press was an Oaschi invention, a mass-production means of writing using captive valkes. While the small cephalopods were the basis of the Oaschi writing system, the printing press involved putting them inside a machine which automatically triggered their involuntary reflex. To do this, the valkes were restrained in place so that the correct pressure point could be used. It was quickly outlawed, and led to the outlawing of valkes as a writing tool altogether.   The press was created by a publishing company who wanted to increase production cheaply. They created a contraption which held caged valkes in rows below pins which would lower and trigger their pressure points as required. They kept the technology a trade secret, but a whistle-blower from the company publicised what they were doing, and there followed a public movement to stop them. Legal action was taken swiftly and the contraption was removed, the valkes who had been kept inside rescued.   Although the press itself was destroyed, its design found its way onto the black market. While debate over whether or not to outlaw valkes as writing tools altogether went on, artificial alternatives were developed; however because these were more expensive, the valke press design was in demand. Eventually the original plans were located and destroyed, and it's thought that all copies were tracked down and destroyed as well.   There were several notable attempts to re-create the valke printing press in the years immediately following its outlawing. However, as the use of the artificial ink and mechanical press grew, the manufacturing of both became cheaper, and after a couple of decades using valkes no longer cut costs.

Squid-powered Printing Press. This is such a glorious idea! What made it special, just the novel approach, or was there something special about the products it would produce?
