A Review of the Apex Army for Use by Junior Officers and the General Public

The Apex Army is organized into regiments. The organization of a foot (crossbowmen, pike-men and marines) regiment is as follows: Regiments of foot are divided into companies of 80, grouped together by nines to create battalions of 720. 2 Battalions create a regiment which at full strength is 1440 fighting men. Companies are led by Lieutenants, Battalions by Captains. Regiments are led by a Captain of Foot.   The Cavalry regiment is Organized differently to foot regiments. Their organization is as follows: The regiments of horse are typically divided into 40 men troops, five troops make up a squadron of 200 troopers, and 5 squadrons then make up a Regiment, 1000 fighting men in all.   The Apex army also normally employs a number of mercenary companies during wartime. When in Apex service mercenary companies are integrated into the Apex military structure as best can be done. An example would be the Great Old Company which is currently employed with the Apex Expeditionary Forces. This Mercenary company which had 600 fighting men when it was employed by the Republic serves as 1st battalion 4th auxiliary regiment. The 2nd battalion of the 4th auxiliary regiment is made up of other smaller mercenary companies which in Apex service operate as battalions.   During peacetime our Army employs 4 Cavalry regiments, 2 light and 2 heavy, and 12 foot regiments. 4 regiment of marines, 4 regiments of crossbowmen, and 4 regiments of pike-men. This amounts to a total paper strength of 21280. It should be noted that during peacetime all regiments except the marine regiments are kept at half strength. The number of soldiers maintained is thus closer to 12.000 - 13.000 during peacetime.   The Apex Expeditionary Army now employed for service in Haru consists of 2 Cavalry regiments and 2 foot regiments from the regular army which have been brought up to full strength, and an additional approximately 5000 mercenaries organized into 4 auxiliary regiments of foot.   The Army of the Republic is staffed by men of means. Men (or occasionally women) must purchase an officer's commission as a cornet, then serve for 3 years before they can advance to lieutenant by selling their previous commission and purchasing a lieutenants commission. The same is true for those who wish to advance to captain, and Captain of Foot or Cavalry. Acts of exceptional bravery or competence may also be rewarded with promotions. Ranks above Captain of Cavalry or Foot are political appointments. Bellow is a list of the ranks of the Apex Army:   Non-Commissioned:   Armsman (Trooper)   Lance Corporal   Corporal   Sergeant   Sergeant-Major (Staff Sergeant)   Colour Sergeant   Commissioned:   Ensign (Cornet)   Lieutenant -   Captain   Captain of Foot/Cavalry   Lord Lieutenant   Lord Captain   General (The Doge)   In wartime the army is expanded around the core regiments and officers. Apex has a volunteer army, and as such it can be difficult to rapidly expand the army if need be. The Republic solves this issue by hiring mercenaries when needed. While mercenaries are not the most reliable troops they are better trained and equipped than the peasant levies that fill the ranks of the Wend Wall and the Crimson cities. Apex may not match her rivals for numbers, but the training, organization, and skill of her soldiers is unmatched anywhere.
