Columna Veritatis: Vis Divina

To understand Vis Divina is to understand a universal truth of the world, to see, feel and grasp at the strands of reality with the power of the Divine.

Vis

"Vis" is a thin veneer of force that surrounds all things, invisible to the mortal eye and endlessly dancing between dimensions it holds the power to shape reality and create miracles.   Some locations, creatures or even objects may attract or even manipulate Vis to varying degrees. An example of this would be silver, a well-known attractor of Vis, used alongside water and in some cases powdered Iron to create Holy water, this is, in essence, creating a substance that attracts Vis and folding blue Vis strands in an Arx pattern into it while recanting a prayer to the Divine you channel from, this simple spell would fade immediately upon use if it were not for the retentive properties of Silver. It has been observed that these elements interact differently based on the color of strands; Silver, for instance, does not attract black Vis, in some cases, it may even repulse it.   Some creatures can manipulate Vis without divine assistance, for example; Hags, Oni and Dragons, these creatures possess "Supernatural" abilities that allow them to create and alter Vis. If one considers the world of Vis an ocean, Folcrums are those that have learned to swim and hold their breath, while these creatures are like fish; they live in it all their life, they breathe it. This form of Vis manipulation is called Intuitive Magic.   Cleric Fulcrums practice what is known as Prepared Casting, this involves memorizing spells given to them by their patron Divine, these spells have a fixed effect and specific parameters, as such a Cleric can depend on a similar outcome each time the spell is cast. Preparing spells in this way is a mentally taxing and difficult process that requires years of practice to master as the intricate patterns and thaumaturgic vocalizations are extraordinarily complex.

Manipulating Vis

There are three known ways to manipulate Vis as a Fulcrum:

Vocal

The most contested tool of manipulation is that of your own voice, it is debated still on if the words themselves carry meaning and "commands" reality into bending to your will, or if its simply the act of focusing one's mind on a specific aspect, word or frequency that tunes the caster into the surrounding Vis. While little is truly known about this aspect, it is still by far the most common form of Manipulation.   It is theorized that "Name Magic" is a relevant part of Spell Vocalization, especially in regards to magical spells intended to affect a creature's soul, this has however not been confirmed.

Somatic

Gesturing, or weaving is often an important part of Vis Divina where you physically manipulate nearby Vis into a shape that correlates with the effect you wish to produce, it is, however, an incredibly abstract process that many Fulcrum struggle with. Some somatic spells are only possible if you perform them with a focusing agent or material component, some movements are as simple as cupping your hand around a small active flame and sending it outwards while focusing the Vis parallel to your movement.   Some The Cobalt Order monks have started blending their Martial arts and their Inner Ki with an external manipulation of Vis in a pseudo-Somatic way that allows them to create elemental effects.

Material

Often a spell is simply too complex or abstract to complete without a specific Material component that can be used to create or manipulate specific Vis. In the earlier example, Silver was used as a Material component for the protection from Evil spell, here the Holy water is consumed by the spell to help concentrate and elongate the spell's effect.   Often the material component is directly linked to the effect of the spell in some direct or abstract way, from crushing a Ruby to create a Continual flame by releasing the Vis contained within the ruby as a source, to using the fur of a bear to enhance your target with some of its endurance by transmuting the Vis.

The Form of Vis

To have any effect on reality, Vis must be shaped into clusters and "woven" into reality, such a cluster takes on a color based on the effect it produces, to those that see Vis the color can be helpful in precise manipulation of Vis to create specific effects, similar to tasting a dish and adding spice to get the desired flavor. If a Cleric wishes to produce a spell of protection, the clusters will emit a faint blue shine to those that see Vis, working with this knowledge is paramount to successful spellcasting as even the faintest cantrip needs to be properly clustered to have any effect, similar to how a strand of hemp fiber is useless alone, while a braid of several twisted together creates a strong rope.   The names and definitions of these "clusters" are still debated, but The Sundar operate on a system of Magic "Schools" where each unique cluster observed is put into a school, specializing in the use of these specific schools allows the Elves to become incredibly adept at manipulating certain clusters.   The Sundar Schools of magic:
  • Abjuration, Blocking, banishing, protecting
  • Conjuration, Producing things/creatures out of thin air
  • Divination, Understanding the past, present and future
  • Enchantment, Entrancing and beguiling
  • Evocation, Raw combative power and damage
  • Illusion, Sensory deception and trickery
  • Necromancy, Curses, creating undead thralls
  • Transmutation, Changing energy and matter

The Power of Vis

Reading thus far one might be lead to believe any mortal with sufficient training could become a magician wielding the divine powers of Vis, but we have yet to cover the most important aspect of Vis Divina; Spell Power. Put simply its an abstract definition of the Vis a Fulcrum can project safely each day, and the raw Vis the caster is able to create or manipulate. Clerics and Paladins gain their Vis from their Patron divine, and through training and disicpline they become able to channel it into reality, this all depends of course on the powers of the Patron divine as they are the glacier that supplies the rivers with flowing water, but like a glacier, their power is not limitless.   Like a massive glacier, the Patron god supplies their Fulcrums with Raw vis, if too much Vis is channeled the river will flood and this would have rather disastrous consequences, both metaphorically and literally. If the patron divine has multiple rivers that carry water from its source, each river becomes lesser for it, and such many divine elect to have few powerful Fulcrums rather than many weak ones that they are unable to supply with ample Spell power for day to day use.   In the year 948 it was decreed by Argus the Allfather that Spell Power should be separated into specific tiers based on the power emitted and Vis used, these Spell "Levels" where to be used as a measurement to more precisely channel Vis to Fulcrums and for casters themselves be able to judge the power of a spell they wished to cast. No known Fulcrum to date has been able to channel spell power higher than tier 5, but it is theorized that a powerful enough mortal may one day be able to cast a level 9 spell.
