The Temple of the Five

"And here you shall raise a great monument of stone, to honor WE who brought you peace" - Commands of the Allfather, verse 8, chapter 15.

Purpose / Function

The temple serves as the religious, cultural and political center of the Ordering. It was originally built as a shrine to the First Five Gods in the place they descended to Renata. Over the years it has been expanded continuously. Today it covers nearly a quarter of the city.

Design

As you near the center of the temple the ground becomes ever holier. Only the Gods and their favored guardians may enter the very Holiest Room at the center of the temple. Here the ground that the Gods first touched when they descended can be seen.
Further from the center one finds spaces for worship. There are shrines to all the gods, prayer spaces and holy fountains. There are schools and training grounds for Guardians and Servants.
The offices of government is connected to the temple. The apartments of officials, servants and guardians, as well as the palaces of the gods themselves are connected to the temple.

Alterations

Demolishing any part of the temple is taboo. Thus whenever an alteration of the temple needs to be made the complex is expanded. More than a thousand years of expansion means the temple now covers a quarter of the city, and is nearly a town unto itself. It has shops, apartments, workshops, smaller shrines and schools.

Architecture

The temple incorporates many styles of architecture. Each generation makes their own additions to the temple, in their own styles.

History

Work on the temple begun in the first decade after the decent. A number of historical events have taken place at the temple. The Great Argument, which eventually resolved the War That Never was took place here. The Temple serves as the center of government in The Ordering.
