Tarritita

Tarritita was the name given to a spirit god that took the shape of a giant centipede, some 200 meters long. Like a plague, Tarritita and her brood would descend upon the sentient and beast alike for hundreds of years. Tarritita's only desire in the world it seems, was to feed and birth Spindle Stalkers. There is no record of any relationship with another spirit or god; if she ever learned a discernible tongue outside her own Tarritita never demonstrated that power. From the many accounts of her behavior through the generations, we can surmise that this spirit possessed a singularly narrow perspective of those that inhabited the world around her. She identified other beings as such: predator, prey, offspring. No more. And according to at least some independent records, the line between the last two was often blurry.   For a spirit of such incredible size, Tarritita slithered over the earth with horrifying rapidity. She ticked along an uncountable number of legs that must have reached some 3 meters off the ground if the most modest estimates of her size are to be taken as fact. On either side of her head were two enormous compound eyes. The front of Tarritita's face however was eclipsed by the behemoth, claw-like mandibles ejecting from beneath either antenna stalks at the forefront. Five separate jaws functioned over a gaping maw of teeth and rot that could never properly close. Her elongated body was covered in a thick, black exoskeleton that no sentient-made weapon could ever hope to crack. At the very tip of her abdomen was a barb as long as a 5 meters that was debatably venomous. Flanking the deadly stinger were two hind pincers that acted as a second pair of mandibles for grabbing prey and predators alike to be pierced. Such an adaptation is unnecessary for most terrestrial sentients of this world, which naturally gives rise to the question of her prey in the spirit world.   A typical feeding raid on a human village would occur as such. The ground would begin to tremble long before Tarritita was seen. She was always accompanied by some number of Spindle Stalkers to carry prey back to her nest. It was reported that most any building or dwelling at the time would collapse like a box of tinder under her weight. To demolish a building, Tarritita would stand a one third of her body erect and latch her mandibles to either side and wrench. If a structure were too large for her jaws to encompass, the force of her swing would be enough to reduce it to rubble. She and her brood of Spindles would then scurry in among the wreckage to salvage what meat lay dead there before moving on to the next house. Those unlucky enough to survive the collapse were taken back to Tarritita's nest for feeding her young. One by one the Spindles would retreat with jaws full until only Tarritita herself remained. As some mark of territory, show of dominance, or simply out of cruelty, Tarritita would linger to continue to wreck havoc and horror upon her victims. Eventually she would grow tired of her games and vanish back into the night.   Tarritita's nest was never discovered. Although she has not been seen for many hundreds of years, her Spindle Stalkers continue to haunt the shadows of the night.
