The Darkroot

History of the Darkroot and Necrotrees

History of the Darkroot: It began mainly as a necromancer's attempt to redeem themselves. The necrotrees were planted to help revive the land, or at least show necromancy wasn't all evil. It was quickly planted in most graveyards, due to the magical gas it created that helped everything grow and flourish, it also got rid of dead bodies. Unexpectedly the various necrotrees grew to connect themselves, creating The Darkroot.   The Darkroot was an intentional creation, meant to link the necrotrees and allow what would be called a Rootlord to rule the land. It has a magical artifact and sort of soul to power it. It can access the memories of the dead and perfectly recreate their bodies, allowing for a sort of dungeon fighting.   A few necrotrees had been altered by the races.   The Necrotrees are derived from a large tree, eons old. This tree is the basis for the entire continent. They took samples, revived them, then saw their potential.   The Darkroot is a large, sentient tree being, dead but sleeping. It was attempting to recreate its own world, but it died here somehow. However, the Darkroot is a way to revive it, though probably nowhere near full power.   Origin Tree Myth: This tree landed here, and the land grew around it. The tree was massive, reaching up to the literal heavens before being destroyed somehow. Splinters landed everywhere, but the stump and lots of the debris ended up landing around.   The Darkroot Origin: The Necrotrees were created simply to justify not persecuting the necromancers, whose knowledge and practice of Necromancy was not accepted.   This power isn't going to abuse itself: The Darkroot was created by what would be the first Rootlord to control all the Necrotrees. With its power, it could either strangle out all other plants and life, or flourish with everything nearby.   .

Brainstorming Darkroot

Tree Magic: The giant tree and Necrotrees are the main source of all magic on the Darkroot continent/world. The Necrotrees turn dead organic matter into magic.   Axe and the Tree Cleric: "The Axe forgets, but the Tree remembers." This is a Cleric with an axe that can absorb lifeforce and has semi-wooden armor, though maybe some metal parts.   .

Necrotrees

Materials

Overview: Materials used by the land for various purposes.   Holy Metal: Metal that focuses on healing abilities and generally nicer abilities. It is worn by paladins and do-gooders. Rootlords would favor this metal for more healing and boosts of good powers.   Unholy Metal: Metal that indiscriminately damages and destroys enemies. Often reactive to a degree, a Rootlord focused on destruction would favor this metal.   Necro Material: Made from necromantic power, likely out of both energy, soul, and the remains of the dead. As armor, it can extend the wearer's lifespan considerably, especially when paired with a weapon. Weapons made with this material leech the very lifeforce from its victims in addition to the regular effects.

Unorganized Organizations

To be organized: Decide whether or not these are race specific or not.   The Gold Man: A man enamored with gold, so much that he wanted to become one with it. He began to research dark rituals, in which gold was required in vast quantities. His people and subjects were forced to work tirelessly for this gold, causing conflict for slaves, disease, and outright death from overwork.   Possibly a Dwarf.   Necrotree Keepers: Necromancers who keep tabs on the Necrotrees of the world. They are mostly neutral, in tune with death and general nature of things. These Necromancers are mainly accepted, not persecuted. They probably are the main necromancers, though there might be some bad ones.   Holy Knights: Knights that not only are decent fighters, but they can revive each other.
