Adding a Spell to a Wizard's Spellbook

A Wizard can add (learn) a new Wizard's spell by copying it into a Wizard's Spellbook.

The requirements to copy a spell from a Spellbook or Spell Scroll into a Wizard's Spellbook are:

1) Being a Wizard with a Spellbook(s).
2) Proficiency in the Arcana skill. Sucess /Failure will be determined by an Arcana skill check.
3) Having a source for the Wizard spell list spell such as a Spellbook or a Spell Scroll of the spell.
4) Having money for the special inks and time to prepare the inks for scribing the spell.
5) Having time to scribe the spell.
6) The Wizard needs a workplace, which will not be disturbed during the process.

If copying a spell from another spell book fail on the Arcana check means the spell is not copied into the Wizard's Spellbook.

If copying from a Spell Scroll, sucess or failure on the Arcana check the Spell Scroll is used up & destroyed.

Spell Level Time (hours) Cost (gp) Arcana Check
Cantrip 1 25 10
1st 2 50 11
2nd 4 50 12
3rd 6 150 13
4th 8 200 14
5th 10 250 15
6th 12 300 16
7th 14 350 17
8th 16 400 18
9th 18 450 19

Being a Wizard of a particular school will halve the time & cost of scribing a spell of the same school usually.

Note: Spells which are not on the Wizard's spell list usually can not be learned or added to the spellbook. There are specific exceptions for specific sub-classes of Wizard and /or feats which can provide an exception.
