Darien

Darien was the third and youngest child of a clerk employed by the Hull family. They lived over a bakery owned by his maternal grandparents. The bakery was on the edge of the refugee district and was open to all who had coin. When Darien was six, a radicalized group of Smitts started a riot in the neighborhood, targeting business that they felt were supporting all refugees. They threw a bomb into the bakery along with burning or destroying other businesses. Darien was the only survivor in the ensuing fire, which also took the lives of many of the Smitts who had misjudged the strength of the bomb they used. It was considered a miracle as he came out of the fire mostly unscathed, whereas everyone else was burnt almost to the point of being unrecognizable.   Since Darien had no other known living relatives he was taken to an orphanage. He struggled there as he was not physically gifted, nor the smartest, but he made some friends, despite frequently testing their patience as he had ongoing nightmares.   Because of his fathers connection to the Hull family the monks of the orphanage were able to procure an apprenticeship for Darien as a scribe, and since he showed promise as researcher he was put to work in one of the lesser house libraries.   This all came to a crashing halt when he woke from a nightmare to discover a strange glowing mark on his arm.                         Darien was able to utilize the mark and followed its pull to the street of Gods. He was very disappointed and confused when he walked past the temples to Yra, Dreva and Nosyn but to almost the end of the street. Next to the empty lot adjacent to the Dark God, was the temple of Busrus, the God of the Bureau of Souls. As he entered the temple, both confused and afraid the head priest jumped out and him, yelled “boo” and then when the laughing died down he said “welcome acolyte, here’s your hat!”     Now Darien lives in the cloister behind the temple, employed as Deaths Accountant ensuring that all who died are properly accounted for and in the correct place. Darien does not love the god, but serves him out of loyalty and fear, but is learning that Death isn’t so bad, and has a truly warped sense of humor.

Grumpy, scattered, confused
