Hyperborea
Hyperborea is a collection of city-states and settlements sharing the Hyperborean language and culture.
Culture
The most visible element of Hyperborean society are the Jontuns (Giants). Most Jontuns are warriors who follow the Cult of Ymir. The Jontuns are loosely organized by clans in an ever-shifting landscape of alliances, betrayals, obligations and debts. The Jontuns are the robber-barons who rule settlements of human agricultural workers, and bands of either half-orc (name) or orc warriors.
History
According to Hyperborean legend, 7,000 years ago the Jontuns defeated the Dragons and claimed this land. The Jontuns enjoyed prosperity and progress and advanced their civilization. Then 5,000 years ago a strange cataclysm was triggered by a falling star landing in the north. The Jontun civilization collapsed and reverted to the stone age. For 3,000 years the Jontuns made the slow climb out of savagery to reform their civilation. Then a second cataclsym 2,000 years ago moved the Jontun lands farther north and the climate became colder and the growing season shorter. The Jontun civilizations adapted only to be confronted by the Dark Elven armies intent upon conquering the land about 900 years ago. During the battle with the Dark Elves, the demon-lord Yeenoghu, the demon lord of the Death Dells was summoned with devastating results. The race of Gnolls were released upon the land to plague the Jontuns. Since that time, the Hyerborean's have been locked into a struggle to gather enough nutrition to survive winter against the ravages of the gnolls and the generally poor soil and growing conditions.
