The Maelstrom of Madness

Once there were a string of large islands in the Vast Ocean that were the home of the Dark Elves. From these islands the Dark Eleven Mages and Warriors went forth to conquer the world. When the Dark Elves disapeared, so did thier home islands. In the region where the islands once were there is now the Maelstrom of Madness.
The location of the Maelstrom is not fixed it moves about the ocean, but never is found too far from where the islands once were.
Ships sailing too close to the Maelstrom report it affects the crew, making them strange, giving them alien thoughts. Ships caught in the Maelstrom usually are destroyed in the storm, but a few have survived after taking tremendous damage.
