Altar of Spent Blood

A man in desperation, lacking his divine power that he so needed to rule his land, had one final plan. This plan was conducted by him alone, without the knowledge of his people. He would steal away the children first, since they would be harder for the man to keep track of if things went wrong.
The people grew worried, even more than they had been, not long ago, after the gods died. Soon there were only a few youth left, all under constant watch from their guardians. The man, unable to reach the children, started to take the adults, which he would subdue with a potent poison that he had once received from a witch doctor passing through the village years before. Eventually, the man ran out of this sleeping brew, and took to slaying the villagers in their own homes and dragging them to the site.  This unholy ground was an altar to the god of protection, Xikthos, only a year before. Now it was bathed in the blood of innocents, drawn by a man who, in order to save himself, sacrificed all he knew, and no one was there to receive it. The man lay on the cold stone that was caked in dried blood, and screamed. He had nothing left.
