When the goddess of magic sacrificed her being, the cycle of arcane magic was not just greatly disrupted, it ceased function. The only way a wizard could continue their practice was through dark magic, sapping energy from souls and nature to fuel the arcane. The same magics that brought the world to ruin. 1000 years later, her essence is returning into the world, waking slumbering machines and powering ancient cities thought lost.
