The Soul Of The Sea

There lies to the east of the continent of Rethium, the continent of Ethlemthos.
This continent is named after it's largest city, Atlantis.
This same city is rumored to be the largest, oldest and richest city in the world, and is renowned as such for it's history and the countless riches that the people who live there have amassed over their time in this utopian super-metropolis.
But the city was not simply born from a migrating people.
Of the most coveted and precious jewels that are kept in the heart of this massive city along the coast of Ethlemthos, there is but one that is considered to be the most precious and powerful of them all. This string of jewels is kept in the secret vaults below the surface of the bay in which the city sits, and it is kept hidden away amongst the countless treasures so that those seeking fortune may never find the jewel that they are seeking amongst all others.
It is known by many names, but most famously by only one.
  The Soul Of The Sea.
The Soul Of The Sea is a necklace engraved with countless precious stones and fragments of other precious stones and metals that were meticulously harvested from under the ground in the deepest mines, and was given to the unknown ruler of a great kingdom on the continent of Unios when their kingdom fell and their people were forced to migrate from their home to find a new sanctuary in which to start over. This necklace was given to the daughter of this unknown ruler, and the daughter's name was Ehione. She wore this necklace during the survivors' travel onboard The Ark, a massive vessel built of wood to carry the surviving members of the old kingdom to their new home. Unfortunately, only a few days into the voyage, a storm broke out and destroyed the mighty vessel, tearing it apart and sinking it to the bottom of the ocean, taking all hands with it, including the king, his wife and their daughter Ehione and her own son, Lubum. She had fathered the boy with the same man who led the rebellion against the old kingdom, and he had intended to raise Lubum as his heir to the new empire.
Unfortunately, when The Ark sunk, that dream was lost.
But several hundreds of years later, long after The Ark had vanished from the ocean floor, the Soul Of The Sea remained, and with it the body and soul of Ehione and her son Lubum. The necklace was found during a routine hunting party of Water Faerie who had been scavenging for meat for their usual routine, until a young Water Faerie, named Nyneve, found something glittering on the ocean floor and went to investigate it. Subsequently, she found the preserved bodies of Ehione and her son Lubum lying next to the sunken jewel, and Nyneve was quick to take it with her back to the village that their party had come from. What Nyneve didn't know was that this jewel would be the guiding force for an expansion across the oceans even larger than she could have ever imagined.
Shortly after returning to their village and bringing the mysterious necklace to their village elder, he proclaimed that it was a compass returned to their people from the gods of the universe, who had inscribed the numbers of the destination they were to seek out on the backs of the many stones that made up the necklace. Over the next few months, Nyneve and the others prepared for this journey and, before long, they had packed up their village and had set out across the ocean to find the location of their new home.
They travelled through endless miles of deep ocean currents, fighting surface storms, natural predators and losing their way several times before they managed to return to their course one last time. It is said that at the time when the Faerie discovered the ancient continent, it was still quite young and had not fully emerged yet from the ocean to claim it's kingdom above the waves, but whatever the power within the necklace and it's precious stones, it had given them the courage to come this far, and so they staked their claim to the land and began to build their new home.
Over the hundreds and thousands of years that followed, the city grew larger and larger as it's wealth became greater and greater under the leadership of Nyneve's clan and the descendants that followed them. Nyneve is regarded as the first true queen of the city of Atlantis, since her father, the advisor to the leader of their clan, had passed away from a suddenly onset illness not long after the city had finally cemented it's roots and had truly started to grow. The leader of the clan had also passed away and failed to father any children, leaving an original plan for the line of succession out of the question. Thus it was decided that Nyneve herself would rule the city.
But while the city grew, the Soul Of The Sea remained locked away in a deep vault below the surface of the bay. It is believed that shortly after the sinking of The Ark that Ehione and her son were brought into the heavens by the gods and were blessed with eternal life and power over the world. The growth of the city at such a rapid and sustainable rate is believed to be connected to the power that came from the necklace that had been imbued with Ehione's soul after she had passed away, and that her own powers and beliefs had empowered the Faerie race to seek out their new kingdom.
Since it had been given to Ehione as a sign of heirship and rulership over the new kingdom, it seemed fitting and proper that it achieved it's goal, albeit by different means than had previously been intended. Ehione remains a constant visitor of this great city even through modern times and communes with the descendants of Nyneve and her family who have been ruling Atlantis ever since, and she has often praised the wealth and prosperity shown by the great kingdom by the sea.
To this day, the city of Atlantis has continued to grow throughout the years, and when the most recent census had been taken by Rethium scientists, the population had risen to well over one-point-four billion inhabitants. Humans, Orcs, Faerie, Sharkfolk, Fielne, Kitsune and many others call this city their home, and will forever continue to do so until the end of time.
