Cornucopia

by Leviathan
Deep below the surface, hundreds of Cornucopias line a rockshelf, feeding off the marine snow and any unfortunate scavenger unattentive enough to fall inside one.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Cornucopia have a roughly conical shape to them, with their bodies turning to face upwards if they grow on a wall or outcrop. They have four feeding fronds, each is far more plush and developed than its ancestor. Instead of the whole frond moving to deposit the food into the mouth of the organism like the feather barrel, each individual barb on a frond moves in tandem with the others to work like a conveyor belt, shuffling the falling nutrients into the mouth. The water channels are significantly reduced in size, only being little more than an enlarged pore with a small funnel around it. Its nervous system is also significantly reduced. Four tendrils extend from the base of the organism, secreting a biological concrete to allow it to stick to a solid surface.

Genetics and Reproduction

Cornucopia is a broadcast spawner that releases hundreds of sperm and eggs every few months. There are males and females.

Growth Rate & Stages

When sperm and eggs meet they fuse and form a Cornucopia larvae, which moves by thrusting (similar to a jellyfish) until it finds a rock face and settles down, secreting a glue to hold it fast to a rock.

Ecology and Habitats

Cornucopia are a sessile filter feeder feeding off marine snow, it is a keystone species on the seafloor. It is a common prey item for carnivores who don’t mind a light meal. It lives on the deep sea floor and deep continental slopes. Due to it's lack of protective pigment it prefers to stay away from hydrothermal vents.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Cornucopia feeds on marine snow and plankton

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Cornucopia are completely blind and deaf. They can only sense touch specifically on their fronds.
