Return to Hommlet

The campaign takes place primarily within the lands near what is properly known as the Viscounty of Verbobonc, a semi-independent nation that owes feato the Archclericy of Veluna. Decades ago, the demon of decay and fungus, Zuggtmoy, was invited into the world of Oerth by forces aligned with evil and a huge temple was built to facilitate her worship. Zuggtmoy built her Temple around reverence to the destructive power of the elements, and used her mind control spores on individuals that she could use as cult leaders to draw a flock of followers unwittingly into her service. She amassed an army that would have threatened to tear apart the young nations of Veluna and Furyondy, but a counter offensive led my Prince Thrommel IV known as the Righteous Host fought back to contain her power. The rallied forces of humans, elves, dwarves and gnomes engaged in a large scale operation known as the Battle of Emridy Meadows which succeeded in defeating their enemy and sealing away Zuggtmoy with great magic inside her Temple. Over half a century passed and the world mostly forgot about the Temple, or at least ignored its legacy within the region. Veluna and Furyondy, distracted with the Greyhawk Wars and maintaining their own political survival became careless in monitoring the region. It was then left to adventurers who had been called to the Village of Hommlet by happenstance who collectively pulled together under the banner of the resident wizard to fight back against renewed congregations of elemental evil that arrived at the Temple.
---
It has been ten years since the destruction of the Temple of Elemental Evil and the cessation of the malevolent quakes, wildfires and other phenomenon that plagued the region. Banditry on the roads immediately near Hommlet has ceased and security of the village has been professionalized with the completion of a small keep by directive of Viscount Fenward. Stories of Hommlet have traveled far and wide, and it has now become something of an initiation ritual for fledgling adventurers to take a pilgrimage to Hommlet and embark on a quest with others met there; to emulate the success of the Badgers who took a chance and laid to risk their lives to save a sleepy village that the world had forgotten.
