Grung

The grungs have an extensive caste system with the grungs being split into three groups:

  1. The upper caste consists of the Gold and Orange grung. Both the Gold and Orange Grung serve as elite warriors but only the Gold Grung serve as rulers.
  2. The middle caste consists of the Red and Purple Grung. The Purple Grung serve as supervisors to those below them whereas the Red Grung serve as the scholars, with some being proficient in magic. The Red Grung are seen as superior to the Purple, despite being in the same caste, and are even respected by the higher caste.
  3. The lower caste consists of the Blue and Green Grung. The Blue Grung serve as artisans and domestic works and the Green Grung serve as warriors, hunters, and general labourers.
Mobility between the castes was possible if a Grung distinguished themselves to one of their superiors through the use of ritual magic and herbal compounds.

Each colour of grung exudes a slime that collects on their skin and can induce various flavours of madness depending on how the slime enters the body and from which type of grung it comes from. The slime can be absorbed into the skin of most and may poison the target on doing so. Ingesting the slime however can create various psychological effects:

  • Gold Slime enthralls the victim and compels them to obey the slime's forebearer and even allowing them to understand the Grung language;
  • Orange Slime overwhelms the victim with paranoid delusions;
  • Red Slime induces an insatiable hunger;
  • Purple Slime fools the victim into feeling as though their skin in boiling, forcing them to find cool water or mud to soak in to alleviate the psychological heat;
  • Blue Slime compels the afflicted to shout, scream, or otherwise make the loudest noise they can;
  • Green Slime induces an uncontrollable urge to wither climb the nearest tree or hop around like a giant frog.
