Korrlu District

"Some see the feet of snow to trudge as a way to an early grave. I say an early way to the history books"
King Avelon the Frozen

The second largest district by land area, but holding roughly the same population of the Kymba district. This tundra-filled district is home to some of the coldest temperatures in the entire kingdom. This is probably why the Korrla people find it so appealing, with long, cold, winter's not being uncommon across the Siara sea.

Demographics

Being as cold of a district as it is, the Korrlu District was not colonized by any native Moaran or Avaran, instead being colonized by the Brevean and Imi people of the Northern Lands. Leaving that home the Brevean and Imi people found their new home in the Korrlu tundra, with a lot more space than their old homes. Some however, mostly Imi, decided to go south to the Pasmana sea, where they took a liking to the warmer climate, though were persecuted by the Rheyans for many centuries.

Most of the district is home to these two groups, who now call themselves Korrla. Seeing as how most of the Kingdom of Atla is warm most other peoples do not take a liking to this cold tundra, apart from the Atlans, who make up the second largest population group. Although, that might be for different reasons.

Kea Brieger of the head family in Brynna.
The Korrlu district is home to four head families. The Rynnyr and Milnu families of Emprys and Emvly, the Oliana family of Briora, and the Brieger family of Brynna. Each of these families must report to the capital, Almne, when called upon and represent the entire Korrlu district and its people.

Industry & Trade

Its two biggest industries, its timber and freshwater, make up more a 90% of the district's total income. With the large Korrlu taiga surrounding the northern KoRin bay, and the largest freshwater lake, the Brynna, being the source of these two industries.

History

Before Korrla

Calo Brieger in his Alosia green outfit.

An Alosia merchant, name Calo Brieger, went to Emperor Pali II proclaiming that he had found a large uninhabited land filled with riches beyond imagination west of the Siara sea and promised he could pay the Empire back tenfold if he was given proper ships and men for a voyage. Emperor Pali II, an old and reluctant man, was quick to turn away this feeble merchant, not willing to spend money on a folktale while he was in the middle of a war with the Ulus of Kinulu.

The beautiful city of Brevea in the Northern Lands, the Korrla people's true homeland

Calo Brieger turned his attention to another city who was in very much need of land. He travelled down the Handle Bay and to the Free City of Brevea in the Pincer Bay. He made his same claim to the High Counsel in Brevea who immediately accepted this possible turn in profit and land, being much smaller than all its neighbors and in constant threat of invasion. The young merchant was gifted two ships of 50 men and materials to feed and shelter them, with the city wanting him to immediately return home after collecting proof of this new land.

Calo Brieger set sale for these new lands, arriving in a much shorter time than he thought. When he arrived however he was gifted with a cold tundra that was very much like the Northern Alosia Empire and Hinona Tsardom. Scared that the council would not be happy with his finding he decided to not return to Brevea and set up a permanent settlement near a freshwater lake just north of where they landed.

The council in Brevea eventually found out about this permanent settlement and were outraged. The city sent ships out to this settlement, called Lau, and captured and arrested Calo Brieger and had him executed for his crimes. His son however, Lero Breiger, was left as the head man in the settlement and as word got out about this "free city across the sea" many Breveans began to immigrate to Lau to permanently settle. With Brevea seeing their population, the only thing keeping them from destruction, dwindle they realized they had to snuff out all travel across the Siara sea and destroy this colony as it had become to detrimental.

Brevean explorers had stumbled across a new fresh Kingdom that had developed just to the south of Lau, the Polaris Kingdom. The Brevea High Council opened up trading with the King Leon II to the Northern Lands in exchange for sacking and destroying Lau. This helped slow and stop most of the Brevean immigration across the sea and saved Brevea valuable manpower.

Imi Rivalry

After the Brevea people migrated north they had happened upon a town that had been built on an island in the Kera bay. This town, called Emprys, was occupied by a people the Brevea were very much familary with. With their tan complexion ,but red hair and green eyes, an island people of the Ulus of Kinulu had crossed the sea and created a settlement in the north. Though these two peoples had been enemies for a large part of their history, the Brevean people decided to befriend the Imi, seeing that the Imi did not have the numbers the Brevean had, but did have the shelter and food, the two created a good relationship with one another.

These relations broke down quickly however when Queen Nami I first reached the southern tip of the Kera bay and befriended the Imi people, who did not experience the same mistreatment as the Brevean did by King Leon II. The Brevea, now calling themselves the Korrla people, quickly began shunning the Imi people and distancing themselves from them as they allied with the Polaris Kingdom, eventually splitting the city into two. The Imi section, Emprys, on the southern part of the island and the northern, Korrla, section, also called Emprys.

Polaris Rule

Queen Nami I, very relaxed and much more of a traveller and peacemaker than her father, King Leon II

After King Leon II destroyed Lau he set up a new city in its place, Brynna. Though, with most of the refugees from this city fleeing north to an eventual new one, Emprys, Brynna was left low on manpower as most Atlans and Annies refused to work in such cold. Future Polaris Kings worked on getting Korrla to work in the city and provide a seemingly unlimited fresh water source to their Kingdom. King Avelon I was the one who brought the Brieger family back to Brynna in the hopes this would attract certain Korrla back. While this did work for some, most Korrla people still despised the Atlans for the destruction of Lau and befriending of Brevea. His mother, Queen Nami I, also befriending the Imi people of Emprys and brought some down to work in Brynna, which is why the city has such a high Imi (Primi) population even still today, much to the disliking of the Korrla back then.

With King Avelon II (Avelon the Frozen) capturing the cities of Briora and Korrla Emprys, bringing them under Polaris rule, and the Korrla people as a whole, he was quick to force many to move to the city of Lau to work. With the centuries passing, and many people not being taught the history of the Atlans and Korrla, most Korrla began to take a liking to Atlan rule, seeing the prosperity that it brought to the area and the perks and riches that came with it.

Strong alliance

Kea Lynulu, commander during the battle of Krisie, gifted the Kris River Basin for his efforts.

The Korrla people, now strong allies or the Polaris Kingdom and valuable manpower, helped the Polaris Kingdom's discovery and eventual conquest of Avara and its nations. Commander Kea Lynulu is probably the most notable of these people. Defeating the thought undefeatable Daya the Unrelenting at the battle of Krisie, where the old Empress died in battle. Commander Lynulu was gifted the lands of the Kris River Basin, now Lynulu River Basin, and was made an important diplomatic leader, governing the Polaris Kingdom's first occupied lands in Avara. Although this was the catalyst for a long period of many wars and lots of unrest, the united Korrla people stayed loyal to the Polaris family. With many Korrla soldiers serving and generals that led battles within the Lynulu River Valley and northern Avara Plains. Especially General Jamo Kinea who served as the head commander in Queen Riana's absence, who was leading her famous invasion of Rhosaya.

Kingdom of Atla and Korrlu district

Beautiful snowy terrain of the Korrlu district

With the Dayarin Empire and Polaris Kingdom creating the Kingdom of Atla, with the Treaty of Krisie, everything north of the northern border of Brynna lake was to be the new Korrlu district, and everything south to be the Anniy district. This, however, did not sit well with the Korrla people who had been so loyal to the Atlans and felt as though they were being cheated out with this treaty. With the cities of Briora and Brynna both being considered Anniy district cities despite being ethnically Korrla and sitting within the Korrlu tundra border region. When no agreement seemed to be coming anytime soon, rebellions and strikes broke out in Briora and Brynna as the two cities wished to be united with the Korrlu district.
Olia Oliana

Olia Oliana, the last Awakened and important Korrla diplomat, worked directed with King Ryan Oleander and Queen Zinnia Polaris to change the borders to more "realistic" boundaries. With the new, modern, borders of the district being at the midway point of the KoRin bay, making Brynna and Briora both Korrlu district cities.

Tourism

Avelon's Bridge

This frozen Lilite bridge was formed when Avelon the Frozen crossed the KoRin bay during the winter to conquer Emvly

One of the few sites to see in the Korrlu district during the winter, many people flock to the town of Kea to witness the yearly formation of Avelon's Bridge. Once a year during the coldest week in Korrlu, when the shallow waters between Kea and Emvly partially freeze, a full bridge made out of pure Lilite emerges as people pay to walk across the glowing blue bridge.

Geography

The white trees of the Korrlu district have become a high commodity recently

The Korrlu district is made out of two sections, a frozen tundra region that straddles the southern border with the Anniy district, and the large taiga forest that takes up the northern section of the district. The forest has began to shrink as logging for its valuable white timber has become more popular and the district looks for more ways to make money.

Brevean Korrla

Male from the city of Brevea across the Siara sea

The more common kind of Korrla in the Korrlu district, these were the first settlers of Moara from the Northern Lands. Their blonde hair and blue/green eyes is a staple of the people living within the temperate and colder regions of the Northern Lands.

Imi Korrla

Due to the Imi people adorning naturally red hair, a sacred color to the Rheyans, it was thought this may be a reason why they were so mistreated.

Although most of the people who came from the Imi island in the Northern Lands travelled to the warmer region of the Aveave Islands (Primiea district), some landed in Moara and set up shop north, eventually creating the city of Emprys. Their bright hair and emerald eyes with an olive complexion is a staple to the island people who migrated from the axe peninsula in the Northern Lands.

Combat

Jynie

While most do not use a shield, some switch the second axe for a shield for better defense

With logging and timber being such an important part of Korrla culture, it's no surprise that their fighting style has the use of axes. The Jynie fighting style however does not originated from the Korrla people and is one of many styles of fighting used by the Alosia. This fighting style, intended for the use of two swords, has taken a Korrla twist and uses two axes, or an axe and a shield. The on your toes stance of the Alosia style has been changed to a slightly heavier stance due to the weight of the axes. In return for this however, more energy can be put into each swing of the axes rather than just dodging attacks. This attack oriented approach to this reworked style makes this fighting style unique in Atla, and popular.
For some reason, the Rheyan people really take a liking to this combat style, perhaps because of its aggressive style.
