Luciana Fortuyn
Captain Luciana Alice Fortuyn
Captain Luciana Fortuyn was born into the mercantile Fortuyn dynasty of Coalwharf in Linnadeigh (nation). She studied at the Imcar Military College before being commissioned into the Linnadean Navy.
She took command of the RLV Warmspring, a coastal patrol boat, in 117, before taking command of the RLV Robust on her promotion to Lieutenant Commander in 118. She was at sea off Lesjust in 119 at the outbreak of the 3rd Pelspar War, and served with distinction at the Battle of Dragon Tides.
The Robust was sunk in the Battle of Trencher's Point, in a delaying action to protect the Tilborough inlet from a Pelsparran flotilla. The action was successful, though at tremendous cost, and allowed the defences at Pelspar's Folly to be completed. Though disappointed at the losses, Fortuyn was commended for her work and granted command of the RLV Resolute. As its commander, she was part of the fleet that besieged Fort Noireau in 122.
After the war, Fortuyn served with distinction aboard the RLV Noireau, a dreadnought launched in 122, first as First Officer and, from 128, as captain. Her first deployment as its commanding officer was to chart the Rufoss Passage, opening a shorter path between the Sunrise Sea and the Cordweed Sea. This gave her a lifelong affection for the arctic regions, which was to set the tone for her future endeavours.
In 129, she commanded an expedition to Deltackin, escorting the new Linnadean ambassador. The expedition went badly, after a translator inadvertently translated an offensive offhand remark by the ambassador during a meeting. Fortuyn successfully rescued the ambassador, recovering him to the Noireau and instantly placing him under arrest. On return to Rimeport, the ambassador was convicted - in part due to Fortuyn's testimony - and degraded.
The next year, Fortuyn was assigned to the icebreaking battlecruiser RLV Viscount Baerûn, with which she conducted the North Pelagic Expedition of 131. This expedition led to the discovery of the large island of Sanguinullus, named after the First Officer's remark that there was "bloody nothing" there.
In 136, she was transferred to the RLV Chironus, which was to serve as her flagship, and promoted to command of the Asotoc Battlegroup, patrolling the Asotoc Ocean. She was knighted early in 137 and named a Member of the most noble Order of Ember. Two years later, in 139, she began a brief stint ashore. She first served as military attaché to the ambassador to Laclay, a posting she described as "tedious, and too warm", before taking up a position as director of the Naval Oceanographic Institute in 140.
Land, however, held little appeal for her, and the year after she lobbied to return to a seafaring command. She took command of the RLV Indefatigable, a small but robust and powerful icebreaking survey ship, making up for lost time with a flurry of expeditions to the north and south arctic seas.
In 144, she launched an expedition to survey the Hamurabagic Sea, a small but extremely deep rift north of Fitzharold's Land. During this expedition, conversations with the native population revealed that legends spoke of a land far to the north of the sea. The thought stayed with Fortuyn for several years, and her curiosity drove her to launch the ill-fated North Hamurabagic Expedition in 147. In late 147, the expedition discovered an uninhabited island north of Vinlina, and founded a small settlement at the foot of Mount Fortune - after Fortuyn's disappearance renamed Mount Hubris.
Little is known about the expedition's progress after that. A coast was indeed discovered to the north, and two flag camps were found along its shores. In 326 Gz, the wreck of the Indefatigable was discovered. Its log was too badly damaged to be read, but the ship's chronometer had stopped in the autumn of 148. Human remains were found on and around the ship, but none were identifiable.
