Daro
The unofficial capital of Nalendi, the massive city of Daro is composed of multi-story stone buildings connected by swaying wooden bridges and boat canals. With a population numbering somewhere in the tens of thousands, there's always something exciting going on. The buildings are stacked together in tight rows, separated by narrow alleyways and broad canal streets. The majority of structures, especially towards the heart of the city, are at least four stories tall, with multiple houses and businesses on each level. Rooftop gardens, temples, markets, taverns, and parks can be spotted from a high vantage point. Towering palms and other trees provide shade and line the canals. If you need to get around the city on foot, the skybridges that hang between buildings, normally at the 2nd level or higher, are the best way to go. In the center of the city, visitors will find a six-story temple to The God that also functions as a governmental building and diplomatic center.
Points of interest
- Temple of the God: Directly in the city's central district, this massive, six-story temple is dedicated to The God and its unknowable might and power. Visitors can walk the third and fourth floors and see the impressive stone-carved artwork depicting the Fallen Heart, the World throughout its existence, and the history of the city and its inhabitants. The first two floors are city administration offices and records, and are open to employees only. The fifth and sixth floors serve as unnoficial diplomatic offices for regional governors and chiefs to meet and discuss issues that affect all of Nalendi.
- Floating Market: This "street" is one of the largest east-west canals in the city. Each morning, merchants float their wares in on rafts and boats, tie them to their neighbors', and wait for citizens and travelers to float or swim by and make purchases. Different boats sell everything from clothes and linens to books and scrolls, fruits and meats, potions, weapons, tools, spices, jewerly, maps, furniture, magical items, and anything inbetween. You'll have better luck finding what you're looking for in the floating markets than in any store in Daro. There are also floating food and drink vendors who sell snacks and beverages so that buyers will remain in the market longer. The narrow stone footpaths on either side of the canal allow for those without means of crusing the canal to purchase goods also.
