Lipoti

The industrious lipoti dig deep into the earth of the World, building elaborate tunnels and underground villages to live in. Though they may be a rare sight in above-ground cities, they're known for working hard and putting the whole of themselves into their labor, hardly resting until their job is done.

Built to Dig

With stocky, squat bodies and thick limbs, the lipoti fit comfortably and stay warm in their below-ground tunnels. The long claws at the end of each finger are perfectly suited to tearing through soil and chipping away at rock, and these claws continue to grow if they break or become dull.   The lipoti have very poor eyesight due to life down below, but a truly remarkable sense of smell and touch. Other species who expect to meet a totally blind creature are often surprised by the way a lipoti can smell movement by changes in the air, or feel the feet of everyone around them stepping on the earth.

Tunnel to the Underworld

Some cultures hold a belief that the lipoti have the power to dig all the way down to the underworld, a place where the dead reside. Others believe that the lipoti themselves ferry souls down to the underworld when their Worldly body dies. It's said that their poor eyesight is to prevent them from seeing what happens after death; they simply listen, smell, and feel their way there to drop a soul off for its eternal rest. Of course, the cultures that hold these beliefs tend to be ones where few lipoti live, and the average lipoti has just as little idea what happens when a soul moves on as any other species does.
