Rhox
Rhox are a sturdy, large, and powerful species that resemble wild rhinos. With their thick hides and powerful limbs, as well as a sharp horn that never seems to stop growing, they make for intimidating figures.
Rhox culture is one of contemplation, leisure, and moving at your own pace. Breakfast might last three hours, there's always time for a nap or two, and it's expected for religious festivals to bleed over from the end of one week well into the middle of the next. The constant scurrying and motion of other species seems like such a waste of energy.
Though generally even-tempered and amicable, if you find yourself on a rhox's bad side, your best bet might be to run.
Thick Skinned
Rhox are among the largest of the sapient species, on average heavier than all and only shorter than a few. While a loxodon may stand slightly taller, the tip of a rhox's horn might still poke above the loxodon's scalp. Their strong limbs, stout bodies, and heavy shoulders make them look like walking walls of stone to many smaller species. Their thick grey skin is naturally extraordinarily tough - easily able to deflect the bite of predators, and in modern times occasionally deflect a blow from a blade or spell. Rhox still use their horns as weapons, the way their ancestors did in ages past. By using their powerful neck muscles, they can drive it directly into a foe, often killing them outright. If a horn snaps it causes more surprise than pain or woe; it'll grow back to its previous size over the next several months. Rhox also tend to have very poor vision, quickly losing track of things in the dark or at a distance. This is partially made up for by their powerful sense of smell, but navigating a busy street by scent alone leads many a rhox to unwillingly bump into many folk below their eyeline.Battle Tested
When a group of rhox get together, it's typical to see them comparing scars, scrapes, and chips on their horns. Every bump and bruise has a story behind it, and in rhox culture, sharing these stories is a great way to break the ice and make friends. While this is often partially in jest and attempts to make others laugh are frequent, more serious rhox warriors use these chats as measurements of who the greater combatant is. Two fiery rhox warriors might compare battle stories for hours until the only sensible option is to take it outside and fistfight, so they can prove who the strongest really is.A Simple Life
Rhox culture places no great importance on personal possessions or wealth. The original rhox clans only took with them what they could carry on their backs, and this cultural tendency has carried through to this day. Even rhox living in cities live by modest means. Though they might own a home, the possessions inside it typically all fit within a cart or chest, in case the rhox has to pack up and move the way the nomadic ancestors did with the seasons. Charting a path across the plains by the stars was how the old clans did it, so modern rhox mages and priests are typically astronomers as well. There's an almost reverent tone taken when talking about the night sky and the constellations. Other species have misinterpreted this as seeing the stars themselves as deities, but this isn't quite correct. It's more akin to a form of ritual, reading the paths the stars chart across the sky, revealing which path a rhox should take - not just across the World, but in their own personal decisions.
