Totaki
Totaki climbs from a low-lying marshland to high atop the misty peaks of northeastern Nalendi. The homes and river markets at the base of the city are where the poorest citizens live, and the wealth and status of a neighborhood's inhabitants increases in connection with the steep and winding roads that lead to the summit homes of its wealthiest citizens. To save space and money, it's common to see a home built right on top of another, older home. These stacked neighborhoods are especially common in the marsh district.
Points of interest
- Marsh District: The marsh district is where the city's poorest inhabitants live, and also its densest in population. 78% of the city's population lives in these neighborhoods - wooden homes lifted over the marsh on stilts, stacked one on top of another to cram as many citizens together as efficiently as possible. Travel between buildings is done via boat, raft, or suspended bridge. The cloudy green water of the marsh is full of wonderful nutrition for plants and crops, but makes swimming an unsafe method of travel.
- Cliff District: The middle part of the city, the cliff district begins once you've climbed one-hundred feet from the marsh on the city's many winding stairs and footpaths. It contains the middle-wealth portion of the city's population and architecture. Common merchants, guild members, and landowners call this area home. It winds mostly vertically until it reaches the peak district one-thousand feet above the marsh. It's common to see homes partially embedded in the cliffside or jutting out into the air just for a little extra interior space. Getting goods up and down the narrow stairs can be extremely cumbersome and dangerous, and as such couriers in Totaki make a much higher wage than most other cities.
- Peak District: Home to Totaki's nobility, wealthiest citizens, and most magically affluent, the peak district is a rare spot of mostly flat land. The tricky roads that climb to this height suddenly level out into a wide park area for merchants to hawk their wares or public performances. Early homes here were spaced far enough apart to have gardens and walled yards between, but as the population of Totaki grows they're constructed closer together to try and save some space on the peak. The city's courts and governmental buildings are also located here. Less than 5% of the city's population lives in the peak district.
