The Age of Demons

As the world solidified, Demons came to the surface to rule over the Dragons' creations. Eventually, the Dragons and Couatls banded together to seal them away, ending the Age of Demons.

After the world was created, Khyber's fiendish offspring overrun the surface world, creating a hellish environment where rakshasas and night hags rule supreme. Eventually, the Dragons rediscover the Draconic Prophecy, a complex and nearly unfathomable record of all that has been, and ever will be, predicted by the movement of heavenly bodies, the rings of Khyber, and the emergence of Dragonmarks. With the prophecy, they rose from their primitive state to oppose their demonic overlords. Unable to defeat the demonic hordes of the Dragon Below alone, the dragons allied with the couatls to fight against them. The common races existed at this time, though still in primitive states, hiding from the godlike combatants and finding ways to survive. Recognizing their cause would otherwise be lost, the couatls sacrificed most of their number to bind the most powerful of the demon lords and the majority of the fiends back to Khyber. The couatls remain trapped for eternity with the fiends they bind. Victorious, the dragons retreat to Argonnessen, a continent to the far south-east of Khorvare, to contemplate the Prophecy, ignoring the "lesser races."
