Dallikton

Dallikton, from the a'drekh name for Noltêrrë, Dalaia (lit. "Land Across the Sea"), and the IktOrryk word ulikton meaning "hometown" is a small frontier settlement in the untamed wilderness of one of Sekhar's harshest regions. It is regarded as the northernmost permanent settlement in the world, though the hope is that it will not remain so for very long.   The founding of Dallikton was the objective of an expedition jointly funded by the a'drekh of the Red Flight and a coalition of eristurdal states. The impetus for the expedition was a team of eristur researchers seeking to recreate the life and culture of the eristur who lived south of the mountain range known as Winter's Wall, accounts of which only exist in the oral tradition passed down by the IstThanar. As the climate of Noltêrrë is believed to be quite similar to the conditions that the ancestors of the eristurel would have experienced south of Winter's Wall, being able to conduct long-term research in the region was of vital importance. The establishment of a permanent settlement was determined to be a necessary first step in this endeavor.   The a'drekh of the Red Flight were at first meant to be specialist staff members of the expedition due to their expertise in maintaining fires—a vital skill in a frigid land—and navigating frozen seas. Unbeknownst to the eristurdal team, the Red Flight had long desired to expand their holdings north but lacked the requisite expertise to do so. Once the purpose of the expedition was relayed, the Red Flight were more than happy to co-sponsor the expedition. With their enthusiastic assistance, many of the potential troubles were headed off and the establishment of Dallikton was able to proceed with fewer complications than expected.   Although established enough to be settled year-round, Dallikton nevertheless experiences frequent supply problems. These are exacerbated during the long winter months when the settlement relies on specialized ships capable of navigating the icy seas for resupply. Although the consensus is that Dallikton will never be self-sufficient as an inevitable fact of its surrounds, the settlement nevertheless becomes stabler and more self-reliant as the years pass.   At this time, Dallikton is only capable of supporting a skeleton crew during the winter months but the hope is that it will be able to host a full research team year-round before long. Plans for the immediate future include expanding the settlement to include vital infrastructure to relieve the logistics burden for expeditions deep into the interior of the Northlands.
