The Soulkeeper
A Vaun legend stating that a creature living in the Monvette sewers can bring a person back from the dead.
Summary
Before being colonized by Le Veaux, the Asortian city of Cenel had a complex sewer system in which a secret small community had formed consisting of the criminal underbelly of the city known as the Cenel Underground. The Cenel Underground was cleared out after its discovery 1957, and the area was blocked off from the Cenel sewer system so none could enter. Following the colonization of Asortia by Le Veaux and the subsequent appropriation of Cenel as Monvette, a new modern sewer system was built to serve the new capital resulting in the entirety of the original Cenel sewer system to be abandoned. Although there is an accessway from the new Monvette sewers into the Cenel sewers, there is no known way to enter the blocked off areas of the former Cenel Underground.
It's said that there is a creature living in the former Cenel Underground. Accounts of the creature's appearance vary from the normal to the monsterous, and there is no consensus for its species. It's largely agreed that it lives in solitude, but some claim that it's been known to keep undead companions. Popular descriptions include a shadowy figure, a floating mask, or an off-humanoid man. This creature is known as The Soulkeeper, and it is said it protects the Nophetica Well - a well in which the souls of the deceased remain after death - hidden deep in the former Cenel Underground.
It's agreed that if one manages to reach the Soulkeeper by finding a way into its lair it can bring a loved one back from the dead, however the price for such is disputed. Some claim that resurrection is the reward for simply finding it, some claim that those who seek resurrection must beat the Soulkeeper in a battle of wits, and such.
Historical Basis
During Asortian times it was known among the residents of the Cenel Underground that there was a reclusive man who went by "the Necromancer" living in an isolated section of the Underground who indeed seemed to have the ability to conditionally raise the dead, however the Necromancer's services were not public and no amount of pleading (or threatening) would cause him to raise a soul at anothers request. The story of Monvette's Soulkeeper is likely a natural evolution of the story of Cenel's Necromancer, with years of embellishments having altered the lore overtime.
Spread
The spread of this legend initially began through word of mouth, causing it to be impossible to place exactly when it originated. It is believed to have originated in Asortia, before being annexed by Le Veaux, due to living in the Cenel sewers that were later blocked off and replaced with the modern Monvette sewer system. Although the story was eventually committed to paper, there's no telling how long it was spread verbally and how that may have altered the legend over time.
