Interlude - Gotrek

General Summary

As Embril collapsed, Gotrek's vision flashed and he was back on the mountainside. The huge giant stood before him, battered, bloodied and struggling to stand. He hefted his axe and cut his legs out from under him. Stepping up alongside the giant brute Gotrek swung once and was rewarded by the feel of his axe blade decapitating the giant. He heard the sound of a thousand dwarves cheering and was suddenly back in the City of Barakus with his friends.   Determined to find out once and for all what these visions meant, as soon as Gotrek was back in Mochica he visited the temple of Moradin there. He was told that the best place to go for such matters is the city of Overlook in the far off realm of Athena. He was told he could get a ship from Sasserine to get there Athena is a huge nation of sailors. He should track down High Priest Durkik Forgeheart in the Stone Anvil, the name of the Cathedral of Moradin there. Regardless the Stone Anvil is a place all dwarves should visit before they die.   Gotrek took a ship to Athena, after buying a huge barrel of beer and getting Camero to enchant it so it never ran dry. He spent an enjoyable 2 week voyage getting to know his new beer barrel and landed in a small port on the eastern coast near the town of Dennovar. From there he walked the Dawn Way to Overlook via Brindol. As he did so he heard all sorts of rumours about the hordes of Marlek massing in the west.   When in Overlook he found his way to the Stone Anvil. It was indeed a mighty and impressive cathedral, built by dwarves in ancient times. Even the stoic and dour dwarf couldn't help but be impressed. There he met High Priest Durkik who appeared beaten down and tired and seemed very stressed. He muttered about the constant threat of invasion from Marlek and said something about being busy preparing a Call to Arms. When asked about the visions by Gotrek he said that these sorts of things are best dealt with by Kalad of the Sundered Chain the Monastery up in the Stonehome mountains. As Gotrek went to leave and seek out this dwarven mystic Durkik presented Gotrek with a poster and asked him if he could hang it up somewhere obvious when he returned home. It was a Call to Arms for the Elsir Vale - they were after anyone who would come to travel to Overlook and help fight the massing hordes of Marlek. Gotrek decided this was for younger and less experienced heads than his.   Travelling to the Stonehome mountains, the mountain range which separated Marlek's hordes from the civilized nation of Athena, Gotrek made his way to the Monastery of the Sundered Chain. Here dwarven monks trained in both mystical and martial matters. Gotrek found the head of the Monastery, Kalad, a ginger dwarf of friendly and helpful disposition. He explained his visions to the dwarf and was rewarded with some information.   Gotrek was told that he was seeing visions of Khazamort, the dwarven Halls of the Dead. He was told that he was clearly on a path which would lead to some epic event. If he succeeds on this quest then his place in Khazamort alongside the other legends of dwarven mythology will be his. If he fails, hell fall into obscurity. The visions represent his journey to Khazamort and how well he is faring.   Kalad said that there are very few dwarves who ever get these visions and it must mean Gotrek is edging closer to becoming a legendary soul. However, being granted access to the halls of Khazamort requires that he convinces the owner of all souls to release his. To that end he must undertake a perilous journey - he must seek out the Raven Queen herself and petition her for his soul to be his own for all eternity.   Kalad was unsure how one would go about visiting the Goddess of Death, other than by dying, but he suggested Gotrek must have powerful and knowledgeable friends who could no doubt help. Gotrek took the long journey back to Mochica with plenty to think about.
