Interlude - Morgan
General Summary
When Morgan returned to Sasserine he was greeted at the gate by a detachment of Royal guards
who escorted him through the city to the Feather Palace. There he was taken straight to the
chambers of the High Chancellor, Danielus. The High Chancellor was someone Morgan had met
before. Hed always come across as a bit pompous but basically very efficient and Morgan knew
that Danielus was highly respected in court.
The High Chancellor said that he assumed Morgan was fully up to speed with what happened
here? Morgan said he was not, so the Chancellor summarised: The king was assassinated in his
sleep. Magical divinations had been inconclusive - which in itself pointed to powerful magical aid
for the assassins - and physical investigations had led the royal guard to believe that the assassins
had links to Khemit. No contact had been made with Khemit yet. Nothing had come from them
either. The Khemitian connection had not been made public yet.
The reason the High Chancellor had summoned Morgan here was simple: the king had no heir and
was the last of his line. The line of his family had come to an end. This meant the High Chancellor
had to figure out who was now next in line. He had traced the lineage of the noble families of
Mochica back through the ages and found who was next in line. It was not good news. It was Lord
Varazes. Morgan had heard of Lord Varazes. He was a drunk, a gambler and a whorer. He would
make a very, very bad king.
High Chancellor Danielus then looked Morgan in the eye. There was another option, he said. The
current mayor of Cauldron was an upstanding pillar of society. He was a paladin of the main god
worshipped on this island. He had risen to the position of Lord Mayor through hard work and
great endeavour. He was a known and well-loved local hero. And even more importantly his claim
to the throne, through his ancient and noble line, was almost as strong as Varazes.
Danielus pleaded with Morgan to make an official claim on the throne of Mochica. He said if
Morgan did so the High Court would come into session to debate what was to happen next.
Danielus was convinced that the lords would realise that Morgans claim, though slightly less
strong than Varazes, was far better for the future of the country. He believed they would
acknowledge his claim over the wastrel lord.
Morgan agreed.
Soon the High Court met and ratified his claim to the throne. Morgan was soon crowned King of
Mochica in an amazing ceremony in the Cathedral of St. Cuthbert in Sasserine. High Inquisitor
Jenya performed the ceremony. Morgan moved into the Feather Palace in Sasserine. As a result he
was respectfully removed from office as Lord Mayor of Cauldron and in a surprising turn of
events Harley was given that role.
Morgan quickly realised that High Chancellor Danielus was an excellent administrator. He took
all the boring, mundane, unimportant and trivial stuff away from Morgan, leaving him to only
make choices of significance and importance. This allowed the new king to really shape his rule to
his own design. Morgans rule was a popular one as would be expected.
A few weeks after Morgan's coronation Lord Varazes met an untimely end slipping from the
high cliffs of the Feather Falls a massive waterfall next to the city walls into the river below.
No one mourned his passing.
Going forward the country ran well. The Chancellor was very good at making the normal day to
day running of the country nice and smooth hed been doing this for years. After a few
months he approached Morgan with a delicate matter. He felt the country was vulnerable with a
king with no heir. As such he felt Morgan needed to take a wife, and soon. He asked if Morgan
would he like Danielus to look for one for him? Morgan agreed, siting his own successes in the
matter (Lady Thifirine) as reasons that someone else should do the job for him.
Around this time, an envoy from Albion arrived in Sasserine. He said they were under threat from
the minions of the Demon Prince and as Grandmaster of the Knights of the Sun Morgan was duty
bound to help. What was he going to do? The High Chancellor said that Mochica had its own
problems and perhaps Morgan should relinquish his position as Grandmaster of some far off order
which doesn't need his help. Morgan said he would ponder the matter as it was important to him.
That night Morgan received a visit from the angel Nidrama. She told him that the balance of
power was shifting in the realms of the gods due to Orcus' growing influence. She told him that as
Orcus' power grows the chances of Morgan having a long and prosperous reign suffered greatly.
He should do all he could to fight against Orcus in this realm and perhaps should consider divine
help. The one deity who would be best placed to aid Morgan in his quest to keep Orcus in line is
the Goddess of Death, the Raven Queen...
