Session 01

General Summary

A few months after the events of Drakthar's Way the rains finally came. Although it had been raining on and off since the party had arrived in Cauldron, these rains were different. They were torrential. They lashed down so extremely hard that within minutes the city was awash with all sorts of flotsam being washed down the caldera's sides into the crater lake in the centre of the city. And these rains, once they had continued for a day or two, meant one thing to the people of Cauldron: the Flood Festival had began.   Within days merchants began flocking to the city. Roadside stalls were errected everywhere with people selling exotic foods and goods. The local shop keepers started their Flood Festival Sales with everything being about 15% to 20% off. Bunting went up all over town. The revelry started across the city and within a few days posters went up as the organisation of Flood Festival began in earnest. An agenda was placed on display all over the city telling where and when each event would take place. There were the usual events like the procession, the street performers party, the infamous Drink Down the Flood drinking competition and the crater lake monster hunt. But this year the Temple of Kord was organising a series of athletic competitions in addition, including hammer throwing, archery, weight lifting, caber tossing, a tug of war and some foot races. This would be a Flood Festival to remember.   Magma Force decided that entering into these athletic competitions would do their fame in the city the world of good so they joined in most of them. They didn't do so well however. Also, Morgan, the party representative in Drink Down the Flood, embarrassed himself and the party by puking on the first drink of the first round. Perhaps nerves had got to him?   Then suddenly out of the blue the party received invitations to the famous Demonskar Ball from the noble Aslaxin family, owners of the Coy Nixie. Realising that their son, Zachary II, was a member of their rival adventuring party the Stormblades, the party began to suspect that they were being set up for a fall. They looked into the ball some more and realised it was a massive social occasion and a place where the uninitiated or uneducated could be made to look very foolish in front of all the of the important people of the city. They toyed with the idea of refusing to go but realised this in itself could be seen as a sign of weakness so decided to instead get into the preparations for the ball with all their effort. They arranged for the hire of costumes, spending hundreds of gold on the best ones in the city. They hired the best coach they could find to take them all to the ball in splendour and luxury. They enlisted in dance and etiquette lessons at the academy, specifically learning the complex dance steps and strange etiquette of the ball. Even the surely Gotrek was convinced he needed to join in and was signed up for dancing and etiquette lessons and hired an expensive costume. Morgan also realised that his invite was special. He had been invited to go as the leader of the demons who attacked Cauldron and its founder Surabar Spellmason. This demon, called Nabthatoron, was the right hand demon of a demon prince no less and lead the hordes who rampaged out of the Demonskar 700 years ago. It turned out that Morgan had to hire another very expensive costume specifically for the main dance which played out the battle between the demon horde and the founding fathers and in which the person playing Surabar Spellmason would defeat Nabthatoron. The dance steps were very complex and Morgan realised his chances for making a fool of himself were very high. So he was determined to work as hard as he could on learning the steps and booked in for two weeks of solid dance lessons.
