Session 04

General Summary

It was around lunchtime and the evacuation of the city was well under way. Many of the townsfolk had been escorted from the city and were streaming down the mountainsides to hoped for safety. Magma Force found themselves in the vicinity of the town hall when they realised they were in the middle of three large groups of rapidly approaching people. Angry people. These people had lost homes, livelihoods and loved ones and were looking for people to blame. Regardless of the fact that Magma Force had spent their morning saving lives and property, the mob saw them as authority figures and it was clear they were about to lash out.   This was a chance for Magma Force to show their true colours. The mob moved in, rapidly and aggressively. Magma Force dropped back, drawing no weapons, but hefting their shields. Morgan was aided by the whole group as he sought to bring order to the chaos but it was hard going. The mob were throwing things, kicking, punching and even battering our heroes with rubble from the collapsing city. But Magma Force stood proud, taking the beating, supporting each other and by their complete refusal to fight back, slowly earning the ear and the respect of the mob. Eventually, the mob broke and Morgan was able to convince them to evacuate the city, rather than trying to spend their last moments tearing it down.   Presently the group found themselves on the other, southern side of the city. They were just passing by Orac's Bathhouse, the dwarven building resisting the ravages of the volcano's eruption. Without warning a body tumbled from the sky, landing with a wet thump in the middle of the street, splattering a large area around it with a copious spray of black sludge. The creature was humanoid in shape, about seven foot tall, possessing long arms and legs. Strange tentacle-like fronds grew from the creatures chin, writhing everywhere. Its skin secreted more of the tar-like ooze even as its body shuddered twice and then lay still. This unfortunate creature seemed only to be the precursor of a full-fledged storm of falling bodies as another dozen or so similar creatures tumbled out of the sky. They simply appeared in the air at various elevations and crashed down through roofs, glancing off of statues and walls or simply thudding down into the street like the first. And unlike the initial victim, it appeared that at least a few of the creatures had angrily survived their falls.   Magma Force, at once distressed by the appearance of demons on the streets of their city, and perhaps pleased that here was a foe they could at least engage in combat, drew weapons and charged. Gotrek waded right into the middle of the fray, clambering atop a big pile of rubble, his great axe swinging in his hands. But he became the focus of the demons' attention and found himself bombarded by psychic attack from the demons' de facto leader. Morgan tried to get there to help the dwarf but he got caught up by the chains of a group of kytons - chain devils who wrapped his legs with their spiked chains, holding him fast. Camero threw spell fire and arcane powers into the fray whilst Harley danced across the rubble to aid Gotrek. Braken used his considerable healing magic to aid the battle and slowly the demon resistance was broken and their evil bodies were destroyed.   Magma Force looked to the sky. More demons were falling from the roiling purple clouds - most were crashing and dying but a few were surviving and engaging the few patrols in melee. Other demons seemed intent on rounding up townsfolk, perhaps the nature of the demons from the prison plane of Carceri was such that they felt a need to take prisoners themselves? Perhaps there was some ulterior mission or motive that these demons shared?
