Session 16
General Summary
When Elijah stepped off the boat the first thing he noticed were the subtle signs of a thieves guild
in place. The signs declared (to those who knew what to look for) that this town was the territory
of the Ebon Union guild of thieves. Elijah knew that such a guild had been run out of Endhome
recently and had seen no signs of them in Pembrose or Twain. The signs said that if a made
man wanted to contact the guild they should go and see Harry Jack the Peddler.
Jaina headed off to the Church of the Everlasting Light, the local shrine to Pelor, telling the group
she was going to visit with Priestess Jeffar and would be at the church if needed. Fett was still off
visiting the fletcher. The other three decided that whilst the sun was up they would go and check
out the graveyard on the trail of the two missing dwarves.
They crossed the bridge and climbed the short hill up to the low iron fence which surrounded the
graveyard. The graveyard comprised a whole bunch of headstones and one ancient mausoleum,
merely ten feet square. A cursory search of the graveyard revealed nothing much of interest, save
noting that the door to the mausoleum was open, so they pushed inside. Elijah searched about and
found that one flagstone in the corner which appeared to have been moved recently. Tapping on it
he found there was a hollow space beneath it. Drax straddled it and with muscles bulging, lifted it
clear to reveal a chute dropping into the darkness. Lynott lit a torch and the chute appeared to drop
twenty feet to a corridor. Drax climbed down first and the others followed him.
The corridor was dressed stone, ten feet high and pretty straight. Drax said he thought it had been
built by humans a fairly long time ago. It lead onto a rusty portcullis which was half blocking the
corridor. The portcullis had been dropped down so that there was a two foot gap at the bottom.
Elijah was able to duck his head and walk underneath easily enough but the other two had to crawl
under. Beyond this portcullis was a side alcove containing a double door, covered in arcane runes.
The group looked them over but other than getting an uneasy feeling they were unable to decipher
their meaning or if they were dangerous though they suspected they were. Drax noted a slight
crack in the mortar in the wall opposite the rune covered door and with some quick checking it
was clear there was a secret door there. They decided to leave it for later, as they all agreed it was
doubtful the two dwarves they were searching for would have gone through that door it simply
felt too dangerous. Heading further down the corridor, beyond the rune covered doors in their side
alcove, was another rusty half shut portcullis which they crawled under. This led to a dead end but
again Drax noted signs of bad masonry and with some more work was able to determine that this
was another secret door. Elijah checked it for traps and having found none Drax pushed it open
whilst Lynott held his torch aloft.
Beyond was a natural cave only 4 high. They moved out into it and it led to a huge cavern
which dropped down and away over a cliff face. They could not see the far side nor even the
bottom with their torch light but a hemp rope dropped off into the darkness. Lynott dropped his
torch over the edge and it plummeted 150 ft. to land at the foot of the cliff. Down there at the foot
of the cliff could vaguely be made out two bodies dwarves. They were probably Keli and Deli
and they didnt look well. Lynott fumbled in his backpack for another torch and suddenly there
were loud screeches coming from the darkness. Swooping on flapping wings into the small cave
mouth, four grey marble looking creatures swarmed gargoyles! Lynott quickly struck his torch
and was able to see at last, choosing to use it as a weapon as well as his holy magic. Drax laid
about him with Demonbane, his magical axe fully effective against the beasts. Elijah found his
non-magical weapons to be less effective so took a new approach. He ducked into the shadows
and hid, biding his time. When the time came that the gargoyles had lost track of his position he
stepped up from the shadows and unleashed a deadly arrow (having picked up bow skill from Fett
during their barge trip together) which shot right into a gargoyles neck. The monster cawed
once and flopped dead on the cave floor. The last gargoyle flew back into the darkness and out of
sight.
Our heroes breathed a sigh of relief and looked about them to take stock
