Utaku Sera
Like most battlemaidens, Sera is a dedicated traditionalist. A horse archer and the second to Naomi, the two of them have grown up together since childhood. They have, for all intents and purposes, been married to one another; they sleep together with their squad, their horses know each other, they share everything.
Sera was there at the war of the Dark Oracle, and Sera fought bravely during the incursion. Her battalion destroyed their enemies, but Sera got too far ahead of the line and ended up surrounded and separated when she tried to rescue a fellow maiden from the field. While she got that woman out, she was set upon by many of the Oni there.
She paid for that mistake, almost with her life, but certainly with her soul. When Naomi came to her rescue a half an hour into her torment and loss, it was far too late to get her cleansed. She was rushed back to a medic, but the damage was done, and she was forced to live a new life: one of restraint. Never to marry. Never to be happy. To do all just to make sure her punishment would be shorter.
Her family and home within the squad never changed, and she was always Naomi's second, but her dreams of motherhood died that day. She loathed herself entirely. It wasn't until Tanaka came into her life that Sera saw a second chance, and that was dangerous. Tanaka was a woman who embraced her taint--a member of the Spider clan. She said that taint had set her free, allowed her to be who she always wanted to be. She spoke of hope, but in dangerous blasphemies.
Sera fell in love with her, but never actually embraced what she said. Her traditional roots were too deep in the ground, and her fear for Tanaka's soul too great.
