Hazelnut

Original Chararacter by fall0410., adapted by Jordan Beasley
Hazelnut is a young Tiefling Druid, raised in the arcane wilderness of the Sapphire Weald by her adoptive mother and mentor, Nana Tulla. Found abandoned as an infant, wrapped in a torn banner depicting a hazelnut tree, she grew up immersed in the magic-rich environment of the Weald. Her upbringing under Nana Tulla's stern and practical guidance has shaped Hazelnut into a resourceful, independent soul, deeply connected to both the natural and magical forces that permeate her homeland.   Though she learned the practical skills of druidry, such as herbalism and bushcraft, Hazelnut's education went beyond survival. She gained an intuitive understanding of the delicate balance between nature and the arcane, especially the powerful Ley Lines that pulse beneath the land. Despite her deep connection to the forest, she remains inexperienced in dealing with the outside world, having only observed Tatharians from afar.   Her life shifted dramatically when Nana Tulla detected an impending magical disaster, the Mythek Vortex, forcing Hazelnut to leave the Weald earlier than planned. Now, armed with the Salvage Sickle—crafted from the remnants of a Rogue magical tree-cutting machine—Hazelnut ventures into the world beyond the Weald, seeking knowledge and a way to avert the coming storm. Her journey will test not only her druidic powers but also her understanding of a society she barely knows.

Personal history

Discovered as an infant on the fringes of the Sapphire Weald, Hazelnut was found by Nana Tulla, a seasoned Human Druid known for her sharp tongue and no-nonsense approach. The circumstances surrounding Hazelnut’s abandonment remain a mystery, with only a torn banner bearing the image of a hazelnut tree and a small music box hinting at her origins. It was from this banner that Nana Tulla gave her the name Hazelnut, a name rooted in practicality rather than sentiment, yet symbolic of the natural world she would come to embody.   Raised within the arcane-infused environment of the Weald, Hazelnut developed an innate connection to both the magical and natural forces that defined her surroundings. Under Nana Tulla’s stern guidance, Hazelnut was trained in the druidic arts—not through gentle instruction, but through hard-earned lessons in survival and self-reliance. She learned the practical skills of herbalism, bushcraft, and cooking, but Tulla also instilled in her a deep understanding of the delicate balance between nature and the Ley Lines that surged beneath the forest. Magic, to Hazelnut, was not a distant or abstract force; it was alive, interwoven with the life of the forest itself, a concept made clear through Tulla’s gruff but steady tutelage.   Her life took an unexpected turn when Nana Tulla, ever watchful of the forest’s signs, sensed a looming danger—the Mythek Vortex, a rare and destructive arcane storm. Recognizing the threat it posed, Tulla decided to send Hazelnut on her druidic journey much sooner than either had anticipated. Without fanfare, Tulla made it clear that Hazelnut was to leave the relative safety of the Weald and seek out the knowledge needed to understand this phenomenon. There was no room for hesitation—survival often depended on quick action, a lesson Tulla had drilled into her over the years.   Not long after leaving the Weald, Hazelnut's resourcefulness was put to the test. Near Adamantine Reach, she encountered a Rogue magical tree-cutting machine—an invention of the Tatharians, now spiraling out of control and threatening to ravage the surrounding landscape. Hazelnut’s innate connection to nature and her quick thinking allowed her to stop the machine, neutralizing the threat before it could cause irreversible damage to the ecosystem. This moment marked a turning point in her development as a druid, showcasing her ability to protect the natural world and her capacity for decisive action under pressure.   From the wreckage of the machine, Hazelnut salvaged fragments of the tree-cutting blade. Using a blend of bushcraft and druidic magic, she fashioned these remnants into a weapon—the Salvage Sickle. More than just a tool for defense, the sickle symbolizes Hazelnut’s adaptability and her philosophy of repurposing destruction into something constructive. Infused with residual arcane energy, the Salvage Sickle became both a practical asset and a reminder of the balance she must maintain between the forces of nature and the intrusion of external, often disruptive technologies.   Now, Hazelnut finds herself traveling toward Tatharia Capitolina, the center of Tatharian civilization, where she seeks the Librarium—Rolara’s greatest repository of knowledge. Her mission is clear: to uncover the nature and origins of the Mythek Vortex, a storm so powerful that even Nana Tulla could not fully comprehend it. Though her quest is driven by the urgency to prevent a catastrophe, Hazelnut also feels the weight of responsibility, not just to the Weald, but to the world beyond it.   Despite her deep connection to nature, Hazelnut’s interactions with people outside the Weald have been limited. She had observed Tatharian mining and exploration expeditions from a distance, always heeding Nana Tulla’s warnings to avoid contact with outsiders. Now, however, she faces the daunting task of navigating human society, a world as foreign to her as it is unpredictable. Her journey to Tatharia Capitolina will test not only her druidic abilities but also her understanding of the wider world and her place within it.

Intellectual Characteristics

Hazelnut's intellectual characteristics are defined by her profound curiosity and intuitive understanding of the natural world. Although she lacks the ability to visualize or directly interact with the Ley Lines, she possesses a keen awareness of their influence on the environment. This awareness stems from her meticulous observation of natural phenomena and her ability to discern subtle patterns in the ecosystem that hint at underlying arcane energies.   Raised under Nana Tulla's pragmatic and stern tutelage, Hazelnut developed strong analytical and critical thinking skills. She learned to rely on empirical evidence gathered through her experiences in the Sapphire Weald. Her education emphasized the importance of understanding the interconnectedness of all living things, fostering a holistic approach to problem-solving. This perspective enables her to make insightful connections between seemingly unrelated events, enhancing her ability to anticipate and respond to environmental changes.   Hazelnut's resourcefulness is a hallmark of her intellect. The creation of the Salvage Sickle from the remnants of a Rogue tree-cutting machine showcases her innovative application of practical knowledge and her capacity to adapt tools and technologies to serve protective and restorative purposes. This ingenuity reflects a mindset that values sustainability and the repurposing of resources to maintain ecological balance.   Her approach to learning is experiential and reflective. Hazelnut absorbs knowledge through direct engagement with her surroundings, preferring hands-on experiences over abstract theorization. This method has cultivated a deep understanding of herbalism, bushcraft, and the subtle dynamics of the natural world. She is adept at reading the signs of nature, such as animal behaviors, plant growth patterns, and weather changes, which informs her decision-making and enhances her survival skills.   Despite her limited exposure to Human society, Hazelnut demonstrates an eagerness to expand her intellectual horizons. Her journey to Tatharia Capitolina in search of the Librarium signifies a commitment to seeking knowledge beyond her immediate experience. This pursuit reflects her recognition of the complexities of the impending Mythek Vortex and her willingness to embrace unfamiliar disciplines to prevent the catastrophe.   Hazelnut's introspective nature contributes to her intellectual depth. She often engages in thoughtful contemplation, processing her experiences to extract meaningful insights. This reflective practice aids in synthesizing new information with her existing understanding, allowing her to adapt to new challenges effectively. It also supports her moral and ethical reasoning, guiding her actions in alignment with her values of harmony and balance.
