Waggus
Waggus (a.k.a. the Ever-Twitching)
Waggus found himself in a peculiar situation. A hunter, armed with a bow enchanted by the darkest of magics, had set his sights on the Deity. The hunter, a man named Elric, was convinced that capturing the Ever-Twitching would earn him eternal glory.
Waggus, ever the trickster, had other plans.
"Ah, Elric, is it?" Waggus said, materializing before the hunter with a flick of his bramble-woven cloak. "You seem lost."
Elric sneered, drawing an arrow from his quiver. "I'm not lost. I've found exactly what I've been looking for."
Waggus chuckled, his eyes twinkling like stars in the twilight. "Oh, you've found something alright. But perhaps it's not what you expected."
With a wave of his carrot-shaped staff, Waggus conjured an illusion, transforming himself into a mirror image of Elric. The hunter hesitated, his arrow quivering in his bow.
"Who are you really hunting, Elric?" Waggus asked, his voice tinged with a gravity that belied his whimsical appearance. "Is it me, or is it something within yourself?"
Elric's eyes widened, the weight of Waggus's words sinking in. The enchanted arrow slipped from his fingers, burying itself in the ground, its dark Magic neutralized.
Waggus reverted to his original form, his nose twitching in amusement. "Remember, Elric, the greatest hunts often lead us back to ourselves. And sometimes, they lead us to carrots."
With a wink, Waggus vanished, leaving behind a single, golden carrot where the dark arrow had fallen. Elric picked it up, his hands trembling, his heart filled with a newfound humility.
Divine Domains
Trickery
The domain of Trickery is one that Waggus holds dear, a realm that allows him to exercise his cunning and wit. It is not mere deception for deception's sake; it is the art of outwitting, of turning the tables, especially against those who wield power irresponsibly. Waggus is the patron of tricksters, jesters, and all who would use cunning to level the playing field. His divine spells often include illusions, enchantments, and other forms of magical deceit. Worshippers of Waggus find that a well-placed trick can be a powerful tool for justice, or at least for ensuring that hubris is rightfully punished.Nature
Waggus's domain of Nature is not just an extension of his rabbit form; it is a testament to his commitment to the natural world and its often-overlooked inhabitants. He champions the cause of animals, plants, and natural elements, often intervening when they are threatened by the encroachment of civilization or the arrogance of hunters. His divine spells in this domain offer control over natural elements and communion with animals. For Waggus, Nature is not a resource to be exploited but a complex web of life to be respected and protected.Intersection of Domains
The domains of Trickery and Nature intersect in a unique blend that defines Waggus's divine influence. He uses his cunning to protect the natural world, often employing tricks to foil hunters or to lead them astray. Conversely, his deep connection to Nature enhances his tricks, allowing him to use natural elements in creative and unexpected ways. It is this synergy that makes Waggus a complex and multi-dimensional deity, one who uses both wit and natural wisdom to maintain a delicate balance in the world.Artifacts
Waggus' Wondrous Wurzels
This artifact manifests as an ornate, Silver and Gold case with leoprine scrollwork and leaf-shaped filigree that opens to reveal 1d4 magical carrots, or "wurzels" as they are colloquially known. Upon consumption, these wurzels grant the eater a range of abilities including flight, resistance to non-magical slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning damage, and a doubling of their speed for one minute. The wurzels regrow at dawn, ensuring a fresh supply for those in Waggus's favor.Boots of Striding and Springing
While these boots are not unique to the followers of Waggus, they hold special significance within the faith. Devotees, called Laughing Hares, often enchant their own pairs as a rite of passage, imbuing them with the essence of Waggus's speed and agility. These boots grant the wearer enhanced jumping ability and a burst of speed that can be activated once per day.Waggus' Lucky Paw
This artifact appears as a rabbit's foot suspended from a chain of intertwined vines and thorns. Far from a mere trinket, Waggus' Lucky Paw is a powerful charm imbued with both trickery and natural Magic. The wearer gains advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. Additionally, once per day, the wearer can invoke Waggus's trickster spirit to automatically succeed on a Deception, Stealth, or Nature check. However, the paw has a will of its own; misuse it, and you may find your luck running out.Divine Symbols & Sigils
Carrots (Wurzels)
The carrot, or Wurzel as it is known in the sacred texts, is the primary symbol of Waggus. It represents sustenance, growth, and the cunning required to obtain such necessities. Temples dedicated to Waggus often have golden Wurzels adorning their altars. Devotees carry small Wurzel amulets as a sign of their faith and a plea for Waggus's favor.Rabbit's Feet
A symbol of luck and agility, the Rabbit's Foot is often used in rituals that call upon Waggus for protection or escape. It is not uncommon for hunters who have converted to the worship of Waggus to carry a Rabbit's Foot, seeking redemption and protection from their past deeds. The foot is also a subtle reminder of Waggus's own origin, a nod to his eternal struggle against hunters.Rabbit's Ears
Representing keen senses and awareness, Rabbit's Ears are a less common but equally significant symbol. They are often embroidered into the robes of Waggus's clergy and are used in divination rituals. The ears symbolize the need to be ever-vigilant, to listen more than one speaks, and to be aware of the subtleties in the world around you.Secret Sigils
The Sigil of the Wurzel Spiral is a secret symbol known only to the high clergy. It is a complex geometric pattern that incorporates the shape of a carrot and is used in the most sacred and secretive rites. Another is the Sigil of the Twin Ears, used to mark safe havens for those persecuted or in hiding.
